The skills at a glance
Python
LangChain
LangGraph
LlamaIndex
OpenAI API
Job posts for this role ask most for Python, with LangChain, LangGraph and LlamaIndex to build on the models, the OpenAI API and Anthropic Claude as the models, and vector stores such as Pinecone and pgvector for search. Many also ask for Java and Spring Boot, because the AI goes into existing software. The full story of what each skill is used for is on the skills page.
Where GenAI engineers are hired, and where it is spreading
A GenAI engineer builds on top of large language models and does not train them. AI model engineers train and tune the models themselves, and machine learning engineers build classic prediction models from a company's own data.
GenAI is a new discipline, and it is still finding its place. Through 2026 it took a growing part of hiring in every collection except the hiring platforms. Between July and September 2026, when most companies posted fewer openings overall, GenAI held up and its part of hiring grew faster than in any earlier quarter. It is also spreading. Each quarter more companies hired their first GenAI engineers, and more job posts for other roles, from backend to testing, asked for some experience with language models.
Business software and the companies that sell information are the hiring hotspots among product companies today. The newest growth is in security, construction, travel and car-dealer software. Among the services firms, Accenture and the consulting firms' engineering arms are hiring GenAI engineers faster each quarter. The GCCs of banks and healthcare companies are hiring more each quarter, and the retailers, manufacturers, logistics firms and energy majors have started. Big tech hires GenAI engineers more readily than most employers. The hiring platforms were an early source of remote GenAI work and are no longer a large one.
Product companies
Among product companies, GenAI started in B2B software, where every product is gaining an assistant, and in the companies that sell information. It is now reaching industries that had almost no GenAI hiring between October and December 2025.
The biggest hiring hotspot is enterprise SaaS and software, the finance, HR, sales and service tools every business uses, and it is growing fastest too. Its GenAI hiring jumped between July and September 2026. The start-ups that sell enterprise AI agent platforms, like NextDimension AI, Endian AI and Workfabric AI, hire GenAI engineers more heavily than anyone and take juniors readily. Infor and Docusign add agents to the systems that run a company's processes, and UiPath, Skan AI and Hyland began hiring GenAI engineers between April and September 2026 (who they hire). The tools for IT service management (ITSM) and IT operations software had no GenAI openings between October and December 2025, and by July to September 2026 GenAI was one of their larger roles, led by ServiceNow, with TeamViewer and Glean newly hiring. In the finance department, GenAI spread from a few companies to many, with BlackLine and Anaplan newly hiring. NiCE, Five9 and Talkdesk are building AI into contact centre software (CCaaS) faster each quarter. Salesforce and Seismic build it into sales software, joined by Apollo.io and Demandbase between July and September 2026. Joveo, Sense and Eightfold build AI into hiring software, and Rippling began hiring GenAI engineers in 2026.
The companies that sell information are the other hiring hotspot, and their GenAI hiring held up through 2026. Thomson Reuters and Bloomberg, among the news and professional information providers, build AI assistants over their own content. S&P Global, Morningstar, FactSet and Moody's build research assistants over financial data, ratings and research, and Intuit builds AI helpers for tax and personal finance. Teradata, MongoDB and Databricks add vector search and AI to their databases and data warehouses, and Snowflake and Couchbase joined them in 2026. Alation and Fivetran, which build tools for data integration and governance platforms, began hiring GenAI engineers too. AI labs and model platforms is small, but GenAI is a large part of what it hires for. Lexsi Labs, TrueFoundry and Fiddler AI build MLOps and LLMOps platforms, and Sarvam and SoundHound, among the foundation model companies, build their own models and take juniors readily.
Cybersecurity is where GenAI is making the fastest inroads outside business software. Its GenAI hiring grew in every quarter of 2026, and it spread from a handful of companies to many. Palo Alto Networks, Zscaler and Okta apply AI to security, and Cloudflare, Akamai, Barracuda and OneTrust began hiring GenAI engineers between April and September 2026 (who they hire). The network makers Nokia, Ericsson and Ciena hired their first GenAI engineers between July and September 2026.
Several industries that hardly hired GenAI engineers are now catching up. In travel tech, there were no GenAI openings between October and December 2025. By April to June 2026, Agoda, Expedia and Airbnb were hiring steadily to build the screens of online travel agencies (OTAs), and Priceline, ixigo and Sabre had joined. Software for construction moved from almost no GenAI hiring to some of the fastest growth in the market, with Procore, Bentley Systems, Sitetracker and Trimble hiring. Tekion and Solera are building AI into the software for car dealer software and used-car marketplaces, and their GenAI hiring rose sharply between July and September 2026, when myKaarma and LeadVenture joined them. upGrad and Kaplan joined the education companies hiring GenAI engineers, and OpenGov and Tyler Technologies, which build government software, began hiring them too.
Some industries are not hiring hotspots yet. Payments hires few GenAI engineers, but the early signs are there. Its GenAI hiring rose through 2026, and Stripe, Razorpay, WEX and Billtrust hired their first GenAI engineers between April and September 2026. Health software is not a hiring hotspot yet either. Its GenAI hiring stayed flat, though ModMed, Greenway Health, Veradigm and Provation, which build electronic health record (EHR) software that clinics use, began hiring GenAI engineers. In streaming, JioHotstar and Crunchyroll hired their first GenAI engineers in 2026. The chip makers and the online marketplaces are not hiring hotspots yet, and there are no clear signs of growth so far. Applied Materials and KLA hired a few between April and June 2026, but did not keep it up. Energy software shows only faint signs, with Enverus newly hiring.
Services firms
In the services world, GenAI engineers build assistants and agents for clients, and the growth here is steep. Accenture is by far the largest single employer of GenAI engineers in India. Its GenAI hiring grew sharply through 2026, and by July to September 2026 it was a sizeable part of everything Accenture hired (who they hire). The other IT services giants, like IBM, Infosys, TCS and Wipro, are not a hiring hotspot yet, and their GenAI hiring did not grow through 2026.
The consulting firms' engineering arms are the strongest hiring hotspot in services, and their GenAI hiring grew in every quarter. Deloitte, PwC India, McKinsey and EY build AI for their clients, and BCG X and Bain began hiring GenAI engineers between April and September 2026 (who they hire). GenAI is spreading through the AI and data specialists among the specialist firms built around one skill. Fractal and Quantiphi hire GenAI engineers steadily, and many more of these specialists, like Bristlecone and C5i, hired their first between April and September 2026. Small software shops, like AgileEngine and GeekyAnts, stepped up their GenAI hiring between July and September 2026. BPO and KPO firms, like TELUS Digital, EXL and Sutherland, hire GenAI engineers steadily for the customer-service work they run. The engineering-services firms are not a hiring hotspot yet, but Cyient and NeST Digital hired their first GenAI engineers between July and September 2026. Across services, junior GenAI openings are rare. More on all of them is in the services world's GenAI hiring.
GCCs
Among the GCCs, GenAI hiring grew in every quarter of 2026, and it spread to many more centres. These centres build assistants and agents for the parent's own staff and customers.
The banks hire the most GenAI engineers of any GCC group, and their GenAI hiring rose sharply between July and September 2026. Inside the banks and financial institutions, JPMorganChase, Wells Fargo and Commonwealth Bank lead, and HSBC, BNP Paribas, Fidelity and Franklin Templeton hired their first GenAI engineers in 2026 (who they hire). The healthcare companies hire GenAI engineers more heavily than the banks, and their GenAI hiring grew in every quarter. Inside pharma, medical and healthcare companies, Optum, Carelon, Amgen and Eli Lilly lead (who they hire). Inside the insurers, MetLife and The Hartford build language-model tools for claims and underwriting, and they are the GCCs most open to a junior GenAI engineer.
The other GCC groups are not hiring hotspots yet, but most of them have started. Inside the retailers and consumer-goods companies, GenAI spread from Walmart and Tesco to many more centres, with Costco, IKEA, Best Buy India and Williams-Sonoma newly hiring. Inside the manufacturers and carmakers, Tesla, Volvo Cars and Cummins began hiring GenAI engineers. Inside the logistics operators and distributors, GenAI hiring barely existed until Maersk and Ingram Micro began between July and September 2026. Inside the energy and oil majors, there were no GenAI openings between October 2025 and March 2026, and bp, Shell and SLB began hiring after that. Inside hotels, airlines, property firms and the rest, CBRE, Marriott Tech Accelerator and Southwest Airlines joined JLL between April and September 2026. The telecom and media GCCs show no signs of GenAI hiring so far. More on GenAI across the GCCs is in the GCCs' GenAI hiring.
Big tech
Big tech hires GenAI engineers more readily than most employers, and its GenAI hiring held steady or grew through 2026. Amazon hires the most, building AI into its retail site, Alexa and AWS, and its hiring is steady (who they hire). At Microsoft, GenAI grew through 2026 as Copilot went into nearly every product, until it was a large part of everything Microsoft hires in India (who they hire). Google builds on Gemini, stepped up its GenAI hiring between July and September 2026, and is the most open of the three to a junior (who they hire). Apple hires very few.
Staffing firms and hiring platforms
The hiring platforms, like Turing, Uplers, hackajob and Crossover, were the largest source of remote GenAI work between October 2025 and March 2026, much of it for AI companies abroad. That work faded after March 2026, when Turing all but stopped posting, and they are no longer a large source (who they hire). The staffing companies are not a hiring hotspot yet, but GenAI is spreading through them. Their GenAI placements grew in every quarter of 2026, and by July to September 2026 far more staffing firms were placing GenAI engineers, from TekWissen and HuntingCube to Artech and Dexian.
