Amazon began in 1994 as an online bookshop in Seattle. Today it runs three very different businesses:

Amazon opened its first engineering centre in India in Bengaluru in 2004. It now has large centres in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai. Its Hyderabad campus, opened in 2019, is Amazon's largest building anywhere in the world.
Every name listed here has posted software engineering jobs in India. Audible, Amazon's audiobook company, is covered in the product-companies collection, because its work fits one product line.

The store is the Amazon most people know. In India it runs as Amazon.in, launched in 2013.
Indian rules do not let a foreign-owned company sell its own stock to shoppers online. So Amazon.in is a marketplace. Independent sellers list and sell their goods, and Amazon runs the store around them. It provides the website and app, the payments, and often the storage and delivery.

The software behind the store falls into a few large areas:
Amazon also runs Amazon Business, a store for companies that buy office supplies, equipment and other goods in bulk.
Engineers in India work on Amazon.in. They also work on systems used by Amazon's stores in other countries.
Amazon Web Services, or AWS, rents out computing over the internet. A company that uses AWS doesn't buy its own servers. It rents computing power, storage and hundreds of ready-made services, such as databases, and pays for what it uses.
AWS started in 2006. It is the largest of the three hyperscalers, the biggest cloud providers. The other two are Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. AWS has two regions in India, each a cluster of data centres: one in Mumbai and one in Hyderabad.
AWS also sells ready-made business products built on its cloud. One is Amazon Connect, a contact centre that customer service teams run in the cloud.
Engineers in India build and run parts of AWS's services. Others support the companies that use them.
Prime Video is Amazon's streaming service. It launched in India in 2016, and comes with a Prime membership, along with faster delivery. In 2022 Amazon bought MGM, a Hollywood film studio. Its film and TV business now sits with Prime Video, as Prime Video & MGM Studios.
A streaming service needs a lot of software. It needs apps for phones, TVs and browsers. It needs to deliver video smoothly, over fast and slow connections. And it needs to suggest what to watch next. Amazon Music, Amazon's music streaming service, needs much of the same software.
Lab126 is Amazon's device lab, based in California. Its name hides a small puzzle: 1 stands for A, and 26 for Z, as in "from A to Z". Lab126 designed the Kindle e-reader, the Echo smart speakers with the Alexa voice assistant, and Fire TV.
Building a device means writing software that runs on the device itself, close to its chips and hardware. It also means building the apps and cloud services the device talks to. Lab126 has engineers in India working on this device software. In India, Amazon's devices work also goes by the name Amazon Devices India.
Most of what Amazon sells is also made by other companies. The product-companies collection explains how each kind of product works, through those companies:
Amazon also changed how other retailers work. Many of them built their own engineering centres in India to keep up.
Amazon hires in India under four names:
Amazon also posts jobs under the names Amazon Business, Amazon Music and Amazon Devices India.
Amazon is adding generative AI to all three businesses. In the store, Rufus is a shopping assistant that answers questions about products. Alexa+ is a new version of Alexa, built on generative AI. AWS sells access to many companies' AI models through a service called Bedrock, and designs its own AI chips, called Trainium.
Who these companies hire, and for what, is on What Amazon hires for.
