Cloud and DevOps engineers Engineers who build and run the platforms that software lives on, the cloud, the release pipelines and the monitoring that keeps it all up, and where in India they are hired. What this role isThe skills it needs The skills at a glance AWS Azure GCP Kubernetes Docker

Job posts for this role ask most for AWS, Azure and GCP as the clouds, Kubernetes and Docker to run the software, Terraform and Ansible to set up the servers as code, Jenkins, Azure DevOps and GitHub Actions for the release pipelines, and Python, Go and Bash to automate it all. The full story of what each skill is used for is on the skills page.

Where cloud and DevOps engineers are hired A cloud and DevOps engineer builds the platform that software runs on, the pipelines that ship it and the monitoring that keeps it up. Data engineers build the pipelines that move data across that platform, security engineers make sure it cannot be misused, and backend engineers in Java or Python write the applications that run on it. This is a large role, hired across every kind of employer. The GCCs hire it most heavily, to run the parent's own platforms from India. Among product companies, it is hired most where the infrastructure is the product itself. Microsoft is the big tech hiring hotspot. In the services world, cloud engineers run clients' systems, and the firms that run infrastructure for a living hire them most heavily. It is a role for experienced engineers, and junior openings are few. GCCs

The GCCs are the strongest hiring hotspot for cloud and DevOps engineers. These centres build and run the platforms that the parent's own applications run on.

The banks hire the most cloud engineers of any employer group outside Accenture. Inside the banks and financial institutions, JPMorganChase, Societe Generale, Commonwealth Bank and Barclays build the bank's new cloud platforms, and NatWest Group and Wells Fargo run its wider infrastructure (who they hire). Inside the retailers and consumer-goods companies, Walmart, Tesco, lululemon and Lowe's hire more site reliability engineers than any other GCC group, to keep the parent's shops online (who they hire). Inside pharma, medical and healthcare companies, Optum, HCA Healthcare and Carelon build cloud platforms, and they take juniors more readily than most GCCs (who they hire).

Inside the telecom operators, T-Mobile, Bell Canada and Telstra are small but hire cloud engineers heavily. Inside the media, entertainment and publishing groups, Warner Bros. Discovery, Disney and Fox do the same for their streaming platforms. Cargill, Ford and Volvo Cars hire them for the manufacturers' wider infrastructure. The logistics GCCs hardly hire any. More on cloud and DevOps across the GCCs is in the GCCs' cloud and DevOps hiring.

Product companies

Among product companies, cloud and DevOps engineers are hired most where the infrastructure is what the customer buys. Almost all of these are B2B companies.

Data platforms and AI is the strongest hiring hotspot. NetApp, Veeam Software, Cohesity, Rubrik and Nasuni sell storage and backup as services inside the public clouds, built in Go and Python on Kubernetes (who they hire). Their story is enterprise storage and backup. Databricks, Teradata, Cloudera and MongoDB run managed databases and data warehouses as cloud services. Lexsi Labs, Anyscale and H2O.ai build MLOps and LLMOps platforms, and cloud work is a large part of what they hire for.

Cloud platforms and developer tools hires cloud engineers just as heavily, and here DevOps is the product itself. Red Hat, Canonical and Nutanix build Kubernetes and virtualisation platforms, part of enterprise Linux and private cloud platforms. This is the place to build the cloud rather than run it. Harness, Atlassian and JFrog build DevOps and CI/CD tools, and Sumo Logic and New Relic build observability and monitoring platforms (who they hire).

Business software companies that run their product as a cloud service hire cloud engineers heavily too. Appian and Pegasystems build RPA, process mining and low-code platforms, and Docusign, Boomi and Infor run their products in the cloud. ServiceNow and Ivanti run the tools for IT service management (ITSM) and IT operations software. Freshworks and Zendesk run help desk and customer success software for other businesses, and Notion and Glean run collaboration tools. Anaplan hires cloud engineers for its planning software and takes juniors readily.

In Cybersecurity, Palo Alto Networks, Zscaler, F5, Akamai and Cloudflare run network security, firewalls and SASE as cloud services. In fintech, Mastercard and Visa run card networks and payment processing, the payment networks behind every card, PhonePe runs UPI at scale, Guidewire and Duck Creek move core insurance software (policy, billing and claims) to the cloud, and the trading firms D. E. Shaw and Millennium run low-latency systems. A few more pockets are worth knowing. Viasat hires cloud engineers heavily for satellite connectivity, Ericsson and Nokia for telecom networks, Blue Yonder for supply-chain planning, and Roku and JioHotstar for streaming at scale. The construction, education and marketing software companies hire few.

Big tech

In big tech, Microsoft is the hiring hotspot. Cloud and DevOps is Microsoft's largest role in India, building and running parts of Azure, and it takes juniors more readily than most employers (who they hire). Amazon hires many cloud engineers across its retail site, AWS and Prime Video (who they hire). Apple has a few openings, and Google hires few cloud engineers in India.

Services firms

In the services world, cloud engineers run clients' systems rather than a product of their own. Accenture is the largest single employer of cloud and DevOps engineers in India, and it is more open to juniors than most (who they hire). The IT services giants, like Wipro, IBM, Infosys and TCS, hire many cloud engineers too, almost all experienced.

The firms that run the infrastructure, like Kyndryl, Unisys and Park Place Technologies, hire cloud engineers more heavily than any other services firms, because running clients' platforms is their whole business. Mid-sized IT services firms, like Virtusa, UST and Mphasis, and the quiet foreign majors, like CGI, NTT DATA and DXC Technology, hire them heavily too, and Virtusa and Synechron take juniors more readily. The services firms that feel like product companies, the consulting arms and the engineering-services firms hire few, because their clients run what they build. More on all of them is in the services world's cloud and DevOps hiring.

Staffing firms and hiring platforms

The hiring platforms, like hackajob, Uplers and Weekday AI, offer remote platform work for companies abroad. The staffing companies, like Golden Opportunities, HuntingCube and TekWissen, place fewer cloud engineers, because most clients keep their platform teams in house.

Where cloud and DevOps is rarely hired

Cloud and DevOps engineers are rarely hired by the construction, education and marketing software companies, or by the logistics GCCs. Among the services firms, the consulting arms, the engineering-services firms and the firms that build products for clients hire few.

Roles next door Data engineers build the data pipelines that run on cloud platforms. Security engineers protect the platforms that cloud engineers build. Java engineers, .NET engineers and Python backend engineers write the applications that cloud engineers deploy and run. Test engineers build the automated checks that run inside the release pipelines. Terms used on this page DevOps The practice of building, testing and releasing software automatically, with the same team owning it in production. Kubernetes The system that runs many copies of an application in containers and keeps them healthy. Infrastructure as code Describing servers, networks and databases in files, with tools like Terraform, rather than setting them up by hand. Site reliability engineering Keeping a large service up and fast, measured against agreed targets for how often it may fail. B2B Business to business. A company that sells software or services to other companies. GCC Global capability centre. A global company's own engineering centre in India, building software for its parent.
