What e-commerce and D2C brands companies hire for Industry Vertical 26, E-commerce and D2C brands, in Domain VII, E-commerce, travel and logistics. The short answer The companies in E-commerce and D2C brands sell things to people online. They run the big online marketplaces, the resale and classifieds apps, the brands that sell directly to their customers, the retailers themselves, the platforms that sell to other businesses, and the everyday apps through which people book services. Most of the hiring is at the large online marketplaces, and the Bengaluru centre of eBay, a global marketplace, carries a large share of it. Shopping happens on phones and at enormous scale, so Java engineers lead, mobile engineers are several times as common as at a typical product company, and data and ML engineers are well above their usual weight for search, recommendations and pricing. GenAI and frontend engineers are less common here than at most product companies, and Bengaluru has almost all the work. Who gets hired, and why Java backend and full-stack Mobile Data Cloud and DevOps ML Generalist software Test Go JavaScript and Node Also present

Java backend and full-stack engineers. A marketplace lists millions of items, takes orders around the clock and keeps search, cart and checkout fast under heavy load. Java engineers build these services, most of all at eBay, and at the home-goods marketplace Wayfair, the direct-to-consumer brand Quince and the Indian marketplaces, like Flipkart and Meesho. They are the most common opening, well above their usual weight. The postings require Spring Boot with Kafka and Elasticsearch, and many also require React, Python or Node.

Mobile engineers. Most shopping happens in an app. Mobile engineers build the shopping, resale and service apps, in Swift and SwiftUI for iOS and Kotlin for Android, with GraphQL. They are several times as common here as at a typical product company, at eBay, the resale apps, like StockX and Poshmark, and the brands, and the brands take juniors into these roles readily.

Data engineers. Every search, click and order feeds data that decides what to show, what to stock and what to charge. Data engineers build those pipelines in Python and Java with Spark, Kafka, Flink and Scala, mostly at eBay and Wayfair. They are more than twice as common here as elsewhere.

Cloud and DevOps engineers. A marketplace cannot go down during a sale. Cloud engineers run these platforms in Python, Java and Go with Kubernetes and Terraform, mostly at eBay, and they hold about their usual place.

ML engineers. Search ranking and recommendations decide what a shopper sees first. eBay hires most of the ML engineers here, who train these models in Python with PyTorch, Spark and TensorFlow. They are about three times as common here as at a typical product company.

Generalist software engineers in E-commerce and D2C brands. Several marketplaces and brands, like eBay and Fanatics, hire under a plain software engineer title, for ordinary backend and full-stack work in Python, Java and TypeScript.

Test engineers. Testers are less common here than at most product companies, mostly at the resale apps. Many of the postings are for testing mobile apps with Appium, alongside Selenium and Playwright.

Go engineers. The Southeast Asian super-app Grab, the resale apps and the home-services apps Snabbit and Urban Company hire Go engineers for their services, and this role takes juniors readily.

JavaScript and Node engineers. eBay and Pattern, a company that runs brands' stores on other marketplaces, hire Node engineers with React, TypeScript and GraphQL.

Also present. A small group of fintech software engineers working on payments at eBay and Grab, frontend engineers, Software Engineer, Security roles working on sign-in and identity at eBay, .NET engineers at the electronics distributor Mouser Electronics and the product-content company Syndigo, platform and integration developers, and a small group of GenAI engineers, far below their usual weight.

Rare here. SAP, firmware and C/C++ work barely appear.

Where in the Industry Vertical the work is Market Segment 26.1

Online marketplaces hires more than all the other Market Segments together. The global marketplaces hire Java, data, cloud, mobile and ML engineers, through eBay, Wayfair and Coupang, and India's own hire Java, mobile and data engineers. This is the most closed corner for juniors.

Market Segment 26.3

Direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands is next. Built in India, sold abroad, through Fanatics and Quince, and India's direct brands, through food and beauty brands, like Licious and Purplle, hire Java, mobile, data and test engineers, and they take juniors into mobile roles readily.

Market Segment 26.2

Resale and classifieds platforms is the testing corner, with mobile, cloud and Go engineers, at the resale apps in Chennai and Bengaluru.

Market Segment 26.5

B2B e-commerce platforms hires .NET, Java, general software, frontend and Node engineers at Mouser Electronics, Syndigo and Pattern.

Market Segment 26.6

On-demand services apps hires mobile, Go, fintech and Python engineers at Grab and the home-services apps, and it is the most open to juniors.

Market Segment 26.4

Omnichannel retailers hires very little under its own companies' names.

Some companies listed here have their main home elsewhere. They are Chai Point (Market Segment 28.4, in Industry Vertical 28, Foodtech and quick commerce), Zenoti, Playlist and WellnessLiving (Market Segment 15.6, in Industry Vertical 15, Customer service and CX) and Material Depot (Market Segment 41.6, in Industry Vertical 41, Proptech), with one smaller name. Their hiring is described where they live, not here.

Bengaluru has almost all the work, through the marketplaces and most of the brands. Hyderabad appears through Fanatics, Chennai through the resale app Poshmark, Mumbai through the beauty marketplace Purplle, and Delhi NCR through the home-services app Urban Company, the classifieds site OLX India and several brands.

The door

Entry and junior hiring is below the average for product companies.

Mobile takes the most juniors, followed by Java, cloud, data and test. Mobile and Go take them most readily in proportion. The on-demand services apps and the direct brands are the most open corners, while the big marketplaces hire almost entirely with experience. ML and security roles are hired mostly with experience.
In one line If you build Java services, shopping apps or the data behind search and recommendations, online commerce is a large destination, concentrated in Bengaluru and led by the big marketplaces, though it has cooled through 2026. Terms used on this page GraphQL is a way for an app to ask a server for exactly the data it needs in a single request, an alternative to REST APIs. ETL, extract, transform and load, is moving data out of source systems, cleaning it and loading it where it is analysed. SwiftUI and UIKit are Apple's frameworks for building the screens of iOS apps.
