Omnichannel retailers The retailers themselves, selling in the store, on the app and by delivery from that same store Think of a supermarket chain with a store near your flat. You can walk in and shop. You can order on the chain's app. Or you can have the order delivered in minutes, packed at that same store.

That chain is a retailer: a company that buys goods and sells them to you through its own stores, and more and more through its own app. A marketplace is different. It lets other sellers list their goods. (More on marketplaces in Market Segment 26.1, Online marketplaces.)

A retailer buys goods from their makers, owns them and sells them to you in its stores or on its app. A marketplace lets many other sellers list their own goods, and never owns them.A retailer buys goods from their makers, owns them and sells them to you in its stores or on its app. A marketplace lets many other sellers list their own goods, and never owns them.

This Market Segment covers India's own retailers, and retailers built as technology companies. It covers only one company, Reliance Retail.

Every company named here has posted software engineering jobs in India. Famous companies that don't actively hire software engineers in India are left out. Most of India's retailers are not covered in this Market Segment. The world's large retailers that build technology in India, such as Walmart, Target, Tesco, IKEA and Lowe's, run their own engineering centres here. These are global capability centres (GCCs): engineering centres that large foreign companies run in India for their own work. (More on them in the GCC collection.) Many retailers also buy their software from other companies. (More on it in Industry Vertical 27, Retail tech.)

This Market Segment has one sub-segment.

India's largest retailer

Back to the supermarket near your flat from the start of this Market Segment. In India, the largest chain of such stores belongs to one company.

Reliance Retailwith engineers in Bengaluru, is India's largest retailer. It has tens of thousands of stores across groceries, electronics and fashion. It also runs JioMart for groceries online, and AJIO for fashion online. It is building its commerce technology in Bengaluru. It has few job postings for a company of its size. That suggests much of its technology is built in other Reliance and Jio companies, or bought. (More on Jio, the telecom operator, in Market Segment 1.1, Telecom equipment and operators, in Industry Vertical 1, Networking and telecom.) The store and the app as one.

India's large retailers are joining their stores, their apps and their quick-delivery services into one system. The store also works as a warehouse, from which orders are delivered in minutes. (More on delivery in minutes in Market Segment 28.1, Food and grocery delivery apps, in Industry Vertical 28, Foodtech and quick commerce.) Reliance, with the largest store network and a telecom operator's reach through Jio, is the retailer attempting this at the greatest scale.

The store and the app as one: the same store serves the customer who walks in, packs the orders placed on the app, and sends deliveries out in minutes, all run as one system. The store and the app as one: the same store serves the customer who walks in, packs the orders placed on the app, and sends deliveries out in minutes, all run as one system. That is the retailer: stores, an app and delivery, joined into one system, with Reliance Retail as the largest example in India.
