What these marketplaces really sell is trust between strangers. The buyer of your bike wants to know it is what the ad says it is, that the price is fair, and that paying is safe. So the marketplace offers authentication, checking that an item is genuine and not a fake. It offers a price guide. And it can hold the payment until the item arrives, which the industry calls escrow.
