What semiconductor and chip design companies hire for Industry Vertical 35, Semiconductors and chip design, in Domain IX, Semiconductors and devices. The short answer Semiconductors and chip design companies design, license, make and test chips. Their products are the processors in PCs, servers and phones, the chip designs others license, new kinds of AI chips, the chips that sense, power and control, the chips that talk, memory and drives, the software used to design a chip, and the machines that make and measure it. This is one of the largest Industry Verticals in the product industry, and NVIDIA, the largest AI-chip and graphics company, hires far more than any other, with the phone-chip maker Qualcomm, the chip-design software company Cadence and the PC and server processor maker AMD behind. The work sits close to the silicon, so embedded firmware engineers are the largest group by far, more than six times as common here as at a typical product company, and VLSI and FPGA engineers are more than ten times as common. C/C++ systems engineers are about twice their usual weight. Java, cloud and GenAI engineers are far less common than usual. Hiring kept its place in the product industry through 2026, and the door for juniors is a little wider than average. Who gets hired, and why Embedded firmware C/C++ systems VLSI and FPGA Cloud and DevOps Test GenAI ML Security Also present

Embedded firmware engineers. Every chip needs the software that starts it, drives it and connects it to the operating system. Firmware engineers write it, in C and C++ with device drivers, the Linux kernel, Linux BSPs, bootloaders and RTOS, on ARM. NVIDIA and Qualcomm hire the most, followed by the chip-design licensor Arm, the AI-chip start-up Tsavorite Scalable Intelligence, the flash storage maker Sandisk, AMD and the microcontroller makers, like NXP Semiconductors and Renesas Electronics. A large part of the work is for cars, with QNX, ISO 26262 and ASPICE, and another part is Android on the chip, with AOSP. Firmware engineers are more than six times as common here as at a typical product company, and they take the most juniors here.

C/C++ systems engineers. Chips run inside servers, data centres and networks, and much of the software that makes them useful runs at the level of the operating system. C/C++ systems engineers work there, with the Linux kernel, virtualisation in KVM and Hyper-V, NVIDIA CUDA, compilers and networking, at NVIDIA, the chip-inspection equipment maker KLA, Qualcomm and AMD. They are about twice their usual weight.

VLSI and FPGA engineers. Designing a chip means describing its circuits in a hardware language and checking them before anything is made. VLSI and FPGA engineers do this, in SystemVerilog, Verilog and VHDL with EDA tools, on ASICs, FPGAs and PCIe. The chip-design software companies, like Cadence and Synopsys, hire the most, followed by AMD, Arm, NVIDIA and Sandisk. They are more than ten times as common here as at a typical product company, and almost nowhere else in the product industry hires them.

Cloud and DevOps engineers. NVIDIA runs large clusters to build and test its software and its AI platforms, and it hires most of the cloud engineers here, in Python and Go with Kubernetes, Docker and Linux. Sandisk hires the rest. Cloud engineers are below their usual weight.

Test engineers. KLA, NVIDIA, the chip-equipment makers, like Applied Materials and Lam Research, and AMD hire testers, many of them for embedded testing of drivers and devices, in Python and Java with Playwright and Jenkins. Testers are below their usual weight, and they take juniors readily.

GenAI engineers. NVIDIA, KLA and Cadence hire GenAI engineers to build agents and assistants for their own products and engineers, in Python with LangGraph and LangChain, and some postings require responsible-AI skills. GenAI is far less common here than at most product companies, and its jobs stay open long.

ML engineers. Running AI models well on a chip is part of the chip's value. ML engineers at NVIDIA, Qualcomm, AMD, the microcontroller makers and KLA train and adapt models and fit them to hardware, in Python with PyTorch, TensorFlow and ONNX. They are above their usual weight, and the model-centric roles take juniors readily.

Software Engineer, Security. NVIDIA hires most of the security software engineers here, with the networking-chip company Broadcom and Cadence, on application and cloud security, sign-in with SAML and firewalls. They hold about their usual place.

Also present. Java engineers at Broadcom, far below their usual weight, Python engineers at Cadence and the chip-equipment maker Lam Research, C# and .NET engineers building the software of the inspection machines, frontend engineers in Vue at Cadence, Node engineers at the microcontroller maker Renesas Electronics, mobile engineers at Sandisk, Go engineers at Broadcom, and platform developers.

Rare here. Data engineers, SAP and Salesforce barely appear.

These readings follow the record quarter by quarter, from October to December 2025, the third quarter of the financial year 2025-26, to July to September 2026, the second quarter of 2026-27. A longer record will show whether they last.

Hiring kept its placeOpenings rose to a peak in April to June 2026 and fell between July and September about as much as across product companies, so this Industry Vertical held its share of hiring. Chip design cooledVLSI and FPGA roles were a much larger share of hiring in October to December 2025 than at any time since, while C/C++ systems roles grew through 2026. Testing picked upTest engineers took a larger share of hiring between July and September 2026. AI is behind but growingAI work was a much smaller share of hiring here than across product companies in every quarter, though it grew steadily through 2026. The door narrowedEntry and junior hiring was a larger share of openings at the end of 2025 than in 2026, and it fell in every quarter.
Persistently open roles

More jobs here are persistently open than across product companies.

GenAI and ML roles stay open longest. They are posted again far more often than the same roles elsewhere, and AI jobs as a whole are posted again more often than other jobs here. Firmware, C/C++ systems and cloud roles stay open a little longer than usual too. The skills that turn up most often in the jobs that stay open are SSDs and NVMe, ASIC design, I/O device drivers, compilers, VHDL and QEMU. Test and security jobs fill quickly, and VLSI jobs a little faster than elsewhere. Tsavorite Scalable Intelligence, the chip-design software companies, Texas Instruments, Micron Technology and KLA are regularly hiring, keeping many of their jobs open again and again. How long they stay open. When a job is posted again, its first and last postings are typically about three weeks apart, and rarely more than two months.
Where in the Industry Vertical the work is Market Segment 35.1

Processor and GPU makers holds a large share of the hiring, through NVIDIA, Qualcomm, AMD and the PC-chip maker Intel. Firmware, C/C++ systems, cloud and VLSI engineers lead there, and most of the automotive and Android firmware work is here.

Market Segment 35.8

Chip manufacturing and test equipment is next. Making the chip hires firmware, C/C++, test and GenAI engineers at KLA in Chennai and the chip-equipment makers in Bengaluru, and Testing and measuring hires firmware, C/C++ and cloud engineers at the test-and-measurement makers, like Keysight Technologies and Rohde & Schwarz. This is the most open corner for juniors.

Market Segment 35.7

Chip design software (EDA) hires VLSI engineers above all, with firmware, C/C++ and GenAI engineers, at the two chip-design software companies in Delhi NCR and Bengaluru. It takes many entry-level engineers.

Market Segment 35.4

Analog, power and microcontroller chipmakers hires firmware engineers above all. Analog, power and sensing hires at the analog-chip makers, like Analog Devices and Infineon Technologies, and Microcontrollers for the car and the device at the microcontroller makers, which also hire ML engineers for AI on small devices. Both take juniors readily.

Market Segment 35.6

Memory chips and storage drives hires firmware, VLSI, cloud and C/C++ engineers at Sandisk and Micron Technology.

Market Segment 35.5

Connectivity and wireless chips hires firmware, C/C++, Java and security software engineers at the networking-chip companies, like Broadcom and Marvell Technology, and it is closed to juniors.

Market Segments 35.2 and 35.3 hire less. Arm hires firmware, VLSI and C/C++ engineers, and the AI-chip start-ups, like Tsavorite Scalable Intelligence and Syntiant, hire firmware engineers almost entirely at staff level.

Two companies listed here have their main home elsewhere. They are VIAVI Solutions (Market Segment 1.3, in Industry Vertical 1, Networking and telecom) and Varex Imaging (Market Segment 24.3, in Industry Vertical 24, Hospitals, diagnostics and medical devices). Their hiring is described where they live, not here.

Bengaluru has much of the work, through NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Sandisk, Arm and the chip-design software companies. Hyderabad follows through the processor makers, NXP Semiconductors, Broadcom and Micron Technology. Pune is almost entirely NVIDIA, Delhi NCR is the chip-design software companies and the test-and-measurement makers, Chennai is mostly KLA, and Kolkata appears through Analog Devices.

The door

Entry and junior hiring is a little above the average for product companies, and staff-level hiring is well above it.

Firmware takes the most juniors by far, followed by C/C++, test and VLSI. Test and the model-centric ML roles take them most readily in proportion. Cadence, KLA, NVIDIA and Qualcomm take the most juniors. Making the chip, designing it and the sense, power and control chips are the most open corners. The AI-chip start-ups, Arm and the connectivity-chip makers hire almost entirely with experience.
In one line If you write C or C++ close to the hardware, or design circuits in Verilog, Semiconductors and chip design is the largest and one of the most distinctive destinations in the product industry, centred on Bengaluru with Hyderabad, Pune, Delhi NCR and Chennai, and it held its place through 2026. Terms used on this page Firmware is the software built into a chip or device that starts it and controls the hardware directly. A device driver is the software that lets an operating system use a piece of hardware, and a BSP, or board support package, is the set of drivers and start-up code that makes an operating system run on a particular board. RTOS, a real-time operating system, is an operating system that guarantees a response within a fixed time, used in cars and machines. ISO 26262 and ASPICE are the safety and process standards that software for cars must follow. AOSP, the Android Open Source Project, is the open version of Android that chip makers adapt to run on their chips. VLSI is the design of chips with millions or billions of transistors, and EDA is the software used to design them. An FPGA is a chip that can be rewired after it is made, and an ASIC is a chip built for one purpose. ONNX is a common format for AI models that lets a model trained in one tool run on many kinds of hardware.
