Apple's chips and devices are told separately. (More on them in
The Domain's two Industry Verticals go from the chip to the things built around it, in Semiconductors and chip design, and in Electronics and devices. Every company named in this Domain has posted software engineering jobs in India.
Semiconductors and chip design is the business of the chip itself. Its companies design processors, license chip designs, build new chips for AI, make the chips that sense, power, control, connect and remember, and sell the design software and fab machines every chip depends on, like NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Arm, Cadence and KLA, and more is on
Electronics and devices is the business of the things built around the chip. Its companies make connected appliances and the gadgets people carry, the laptops and printers of the office, and the scanners, screens and sound systems of shops and studios, like Electrolux Group, Logitech, HP, Zebra Technologies and Barco, and more is on
AI is pulling the chip and the device closer together. The biggest change in chips is the AI data centre, where NVIDIA's processors, Broadcom's and Marvell's links and Micron's high-bandwidth memory are designed as one machine. The second change is AI on the device itself. Microcontroller makers like NXP Semiconductors and Renesas Electronics are adding AI engines to chips that cost less than a hundred rupees, laptops are being rebuilt around processors that run AI models on the machine, and Zebra Technologies' handheld scanners now carry a camera and a model that read a damaged label. Each of these devices needs a chip designed for the model and software that fits the model onto the chip.
Companies cross the line between the two verticals and the Domains around them. Qualcomm and MediaTek design the chips inside the phones that Motorola Mobility sells, Silicon Labs' wireless chips connect the appliances of the smart home, and test-equipment makers like Keysight Technologies and Rohde & Schwarz test chips, phones and networks alike. Some of the Domain's companies also reach into other industries, like the medical imaging of Varex Imaging and the network testing of VIAVI Solutions, whose main homes are in Domains VI and I. And India is starting to make what it has long designed, with Tata Electronics building a fab at Dholera and Micron building a memory assembly plant in Gujarat.
For an engineer, the Domain is joined by firmware. Embedded firmware engineers are far more common in both Industry Verticals than at a typical product company, and C/C++ systems engineers work beside them. The chip companies add VLSI and FPGA engineers, found almost nowhere else in the product industry, while the device makers add test and mobile engineers for products that have to work every time.
