Where the work is hardware, cars and chips The software inside a car's braking system may have been written in Pune, by KPIT, a firm that does nothing but automotive software, working for a carmaker.

Everything else in this collection is software about a business: a bank's records, a retailer's app, a client's cloud. The firms in this Company Tier engineer software that lives inside a thing:

  • the controller that runs a car's brakes
  • the design of a chip, before the chip exists
  • the firmware in a medical pump, the software built into the device itself
  • the control system of a factory production line

These firms include Quest Global, L&T Technology Services, Tata Elxsi, Tata Technologies, Cyient, KPIT, Sasken, Tessolve, NeST and ACL Digital, and the European engineering houses ALTEN, Akkodis and Expleo. They sell engineering to manufacturers. The industry calls what they sell ER&D, engineering research and development, to set it apart from IT.

They run on the same services model as the rest of this collection. But the client is a manufacturer, and that changes the language, the tools and the pace. The language is C and C++, and the network the car's controllers talk over, not Java and a web framework. The pace is the product cycle of a car or a chip, which is years, not the few weeks of an app's development cycle. And these firms hire from electronics and mechanical engineering courses as well as computer science, because many of the skills are taught on the job. Nearly all of this work is in Bengaluru.

Every firm named here has posted software engineering jobs in India.

The firms sort by the kind of manufacturer they serve: chip companies, carmakers and their suppliers, and makers of aircraft, medical devices and factory equipment. Some firms span two kinds, such as Sasken and Ignitarium between the chip and embedded work, and L&T Technology Services and Quest Global between the car and everything else that is engineered. The firms sort by the kind of manufacturer they serve: chip companies, carmakers and their suppliers, and makers of aircraft, medical devices and factory equipment. What these firms sell, and to whom

They sell engineering to companies that make things. A carmaker designing a new model needs thousands of engineers for three years, and a few hundred afterwards. An aircraft maker, a chip company, or a maker of medical devices or factory equipment has the same kind of need.

The engineering-services firm supplies the engineers, by the team and by the year, for the parts of the design the manufacturer chooses to hand over:

A manufacturer hands over parts of a design, and the engineering-services firm sends back engineers by the team and by the year. The work covers controller software, chip verification, safety testing and the hardware engineering around them, all done to the manufacturer's standard.A manufacturer hands over parts of a design, and the engineering-services firm sends back engineers by the team and by the year. The work covers controller software, chip verification, safety testing and the hardware engineering around them, all done to the manufacturer's standard.
  • the software in a controller
  • checking that a chip design works, called verification
  • testing embedded software against a safety standard
  • the mechanical and electrical engineering around them

The promise is engineering to the manufacturer's standard. In cars and aircraft, that standard is written into law. So the work is documented, reviewed and certified in ways a web app never is.

The clients are manufacturers: carmakers and their suppliers, aircraft and defence makers, chip companies, and makers of medical devices and industrial equipment. They include the engineering centres these manufacturers have opened in India, which are among the largest employers of embedded engineers in the country. (More on them in Parent Industry 4, Inside the manufacturers and carmakers, in the GCC collection.)

Embedded and automotive

The car is the largest client here. A modern car carries a hundred or more controllers, and more software than an airliner. Carmakers never had enough engineers to write it all, so for twenty years they have handed a large part of it to firms like these, mostly working from Bengaluru and Pune.

Pure automotive firms do almost nothing but embedded work for cars:

KPITin Pune, does nothing but automotive software. Tata Technologiesthe Tata group's engineering arm, was built around Jaguar Land Rover and Tata Motors. Embitel and Deeviaare smaller firms of the same kind, working to the safety standards a car's software must meet.

Their work covers the controllers, the network inside the vehicle, AUTOSAR, the industry standard car software is built to, and the tools carmakers test with.

Broader engineering firms have the car as their largest line among several:

L&T Technology Servicespart of the Larsen & Toubro group, where more than half the work is embedded software Tata Elxsithe Tata group's design and embedded firm, with the car beside media devices such as set-top boxes Quest Globalwith the car beside aircraft, and a large amount of testing ALTEN, Akkodis and Expleothe European engineering houses, whose Indian centres do the same work for European carmakers Saskenan old Bengaluru firm, whose embedded work is more on phones and Android devices than on cars

This is also where the name does not tell you the job. At a broad engineering firm, one engineer may work on a car's brakes while another works on a TV set-top box.

The work is embedded C and C++ on a controller with only a few kilobytes of memory. It includes the vehicle's internal network, real-time operating systems, which must respond within a fixed time, and test rigs that simulate a whole car around the software. It is a different kind of engineering from the web work in the rest of this collection. Demand for it is rising as the car becomes a computer.

Before a chip is made, it exists as a description written in a hardware description language, and as a very large amount of testing. A growing share of that description and testing is done in Bengaluru, by firms that do it for chip companies.

Tessolveis the largest: a semiconductor test and engineering firm. Chip-design firmssmall to mid-sized and based in Bengaluru: Ignitarium, Mirafra, LeadSoc, Silicon Patterns, Scaledge, Eximietas and Modernize Chip Solutions. Their engineers write and check the logic of chips, and the low-level software that first brings a new chip to life: the interfaces a chip talks through, the drivers and the start-up code. Sasken and Ignitariumalso work where this section meets the last: the software that runs on a chip from the day it arrives.

This work needs electronics engineers who know a hardware description language and a chip's interfaces. Few courses teach it, so these firms train many of their own engineers. India's push to design and make chips at home, and the chip companies' own Indian centres, have made those engineers scarce. The chip companies themselves are covered in the product-companies collection. (More on them in Industry Vertical 35, Semiconductors and chip design, in the product-companies collection.)

Aerospace, medical and industrial engineering services

The third kind of client is everything else that is engineered: the aircraft, the medical device, and the factory with its machines.

Quest Globalbegan in aircraft engines. It is still the largest aerospace engineering-services firm in India, with the car and the medical device beside it. Cyientin Hyderabad, is the other aerospace firm. It does more AI work than any other firm here, as the industry starts using AI on engineering data. L&T Technology Servicesalso does industrial and medical engineering, beside its automotive work. Utthungadoes industrial automation and nothing else: the software of the factory floor, and the protocols machines use to talk to each other. Mistralengineers defence electronics. Centum T&S and Trumindsengineer for telecom and defence, each with some AI work. NeST Digitalfrom Kerala, has a Bengaluru centre, focused on testing, that serves these industries. Smaller firmsCreative Synergies, Soliton, ASM Technologies, Yucca Scalian, Triz and Best Engineering Aids

The regulator shapes this work. Software for aircraft and medical devices is written to standards that require every requirement to be traced to a test, every change to be reviewed, and the whole system to be certified before it flies or is used on a patient. So the work is slower, more documented and heavier on testing than in any other part of the services world, and these firms hire many testers and verification engineers. It is also the steadiest engineering here, because a certified system is not rewritten lightly.

In aircraft and medical devices, every requirement is traced to a test, every change is reviewed, and the whole system is certified before it is used. That makes the work slower and heavier on testing, but also the steadiest engineering in this part of the services world. In aircraft and medical devices, every requirement is traced to a test, every change is reviewed, and the whole system is certified before it is used. The firms

Largest first, by size in India. The large Indian firms each have fifteen to forty thousand people.

The manufacturers these firms serve

Every client of these firms is covered in the product-companies collection:

Industry Vertical 38, Automotive and mobilitythe carmakers and their suppliers Industry Vertical 35, Semiconductors and chip designthe chip companies Industry Vertical 39, Aerospace, defence and spacethe aircraft and defence makers Industry Vertical 36, Electronics and devices, and Industry Vertical 24, Hospitals, diagnostics and medical devicesthe device makers Industry Vertical 37, Manufacturing techthe makers of factories and machines

The engineers in this Company Tier work as the manufacturers' extended workforce. The manufacturers' own engineering centres in India hire from these firms directly.

The engineering-services firm that owns a platform.

KPIT is the clearest case. It has built its own vehicle-software platforms and licenses them to carmakers, which treat it as a supplier rather than a source of engineers. Tata Elxsi and L&T Technology Services are moving the same way. The second frontier is the chip: India's push into semiconductors is turning the chip-design firms from subcontractors into the country's own chip-design capacity, and they are growing fast. AI arrives here later than anywhere else in the services world. Embedded software is small, close to the hardware and certified, and the safety standards for cars and aircraft do not yet accept code nobody can trace. So AI arrives first at the edges: testing, documentation, tracing requirements to tests, and analysing engineering data, which is where Cyient's and Truminds' AI work sits. The counter-current is the European houses' model: supplying engineers by the head, which is the staffing model under an engineering name.

That is the engineering-services firm: services firms that build the software inside cars, chips, aircraft and machines, to the manufacturer's standard.
