Virtual desktops (VDI) and digital employee experience The employee's computer, set up, served from the data centre and measured Back to the pharma company in Hyderabad from Market Segment 16.1, IT service management (ITSM) and IT operations software. Every employee's laptop and phone is the IT department's job:
  • it has to be set up before the employee arrives
  • it has to be kept patched, with the latest software fixes
  • it has to be locked if it is lost
  • it has to be wiped when the employee leaves
Each laptop is set up before the employee arrives, kept patched, locked if it is lost, and wiped when the employee leaves. Each laptop is set up before the employee arrives, kept patched, locked if it is lost, and wiped when the employee leaves.

At the pharma company, the 200 people in the customer-support team do not even keep their desktop on a laptop. Their desktop runs in a data centre, and is streamed to whatever screen they sit at.

This Market Segment is about the software for all of that. Its buyers are companies' IT departments. It is where Industry Vertical 16 overlaps most with Industry Vertical 4, Cybersecurity. Managing a device and securing it are now the same product. So most of the companies here that are covered mainly in other Market Segments are in Market Segment 4.4, Endpoint security and device management (in Industry Vertical 4, Cybersecurity).

Every company named here has posted software engineering jobs in India. Famous companies that don't actively hire software engineers in India are left out.

This Market Segment has two sub-segments:

The desktop served from the data centre: the virtual desktop, and applications delivered to any screen. The devices managed and measured: laptops, phones and kiosks, enrolled, configured and watched.

Back to the pharma company's customer-support team from the start of this Market Segment. Each agent's desktop runs on a server in the data centre, or in the cloud. The screen in front of them only shows it. This is called a virtual desktop. If an agent's laptop is lost, no data is lost with it, and the agent can log in from any other screen.

Omnissawith engineers in Bengaluru and Chennai, has the most job postings of any company covered mainly in this Market Segment. It was VMware's end-user computing business, the part that looked after employees' computers. Broadcom sold it after buying VMware, and it is now independent. It sells two main products. Horizon is the virtual desktop that runs in the company's data centre or cloud, and is streamed to the employee. Workspace ONE signs up, sets up and manages the employee's laptops and phones. Its Bengaluru centre builds a large share of both. Citrixwith engineers in Bengaluru, made the virtual desktop a standard in banks, hospitals and call centres. It delivers applications and desktops to any device through a secure gateway. Cloud Software GroupCitrix's owner, has engineers in Pune. It also owns TIBCO. (More on TIBCO in Market Segment 10.2, Integration platforms (iPaaS) and managed file transfer, in Industry Vertical 10, ERP and business automation.) Citrix Systems (R&D)is a separate Citrix company, with engineers in Bengaluru. It carries NetScaler, the load balancer and secure-access product that Cloud Software Group now runs as a business of its own. A load balancer spreads traffic across many servers. (More on secure access in Market Segment 4.5, Network security, firewalls and SASE, in Industry Vertical 4, Cybersecurity.) Omnissa was VMware's end-user computing business, sold by Broadcom after it bought VMware; Citrix belongs to Cloud Software Group, which also owns TIBCO and runs NetScaler as a business of its own.Omnissa was VMware's end-user computing business, sold by Broadcom after it bought VMware; Citrix belongs to Cloud Software Group, which also owns TIBCO and runs NetScaler as a business of its own.

VMware itself, now owned by Broadcom, is covered in Market Segment 5.2, Enterprise Linux and private cloud platforms (in Industry Vertical 5, Cloud providers and OS makers).

The devices managed and measured Unified endpoint management, device management for dedicated devices, digital employee experience, account provisioning

Back to the pharma company from the start of this Market Segment. The sales manager whose laptop would not connect, in Market Segment 16.1, raised a ticket only after an hour of trying. And in the company's warehouse, 300 handheld scanners need the same software update on the same night. The companies in this sub-segment manage the device itself.

Nexthinkthe Swiss company, with engineers in Bengaluru, measures the employee's experience of their computer. The industry calls this digital employee experience. An agent on every laptop reports the slow start-up, the crashing application and the failing Wi-Fi. So IT can fix the problem before the employee raises a ticket. Esperwith engineers in Bengaluru, manages devices that are not laptops: the Android tablets in restaurants, the payment terminals at the till, the kiosks, and the scanners in warehouses. It can update thousands of them at once. Aquerawith engineers in Bengaluru, presents itself as the connectors that create and remove an employee's accounts across applications, as people join and leave. This is called account provisioning. Esper can send one update at once to thousands of devices that are not laptops: tablets in restaurants, payment terminals, kiosks and scanners in warehouses.Esper can send one update at once to thousands of devices that are not laptops: tablets in restaurants, payment terminals, kiosks and scanners in warehouses.

Eight companies covered mainly in other Market Segments bring the rest of this market.

Ripplingsells the new joiner's laptop, accounts and applications from the same record as their payroll. (More on it in Market Segment 12.1, HR, payroll and workforce management software, in Industry Vertical 12, HR tech.) Quest Softwareis here for its tools that manage and move Microsoft's Active Directory, the directory that holds every employee's account. (More on it in Market Segment 4.2, Identity and access management (IAM), in Industry Vertical 4, Cybersecurity.)

Six manage laptops and phones:

JumpCloudfor its cloud directory and device management 42Gearsthe Bengaluru company behind SureMDM Hexnode Jamfwhich manages the Apple devices of companies and schools NinjaOne N-able

These six are covered mainly in Market Segment 4.4, Endpoint security and device management (in Industry Vertical 4, Cybersecurity).

The laptop that reports before the employee complains.

The IT department used to learn about a problem from a ticket. Now the measuring agent on every device tells it first. The next step is already on sale: the same agent fixing the problem itself. The ticket an employee used to raise is becoming the exception.

Some names are not here:

So the pharma company from the start of this Market Segment looks after every employee's computer two ways. Some desktops are served from the data centre, so the screen holds nothing. And every laptop, phone and scanner is managed and measured, so IT often knows about a problem before the employee does.
