Cloud providers and OS makers Cloud providers and OS makers build the layers that every other piece of software runs on. A cloud provider rents out computing power, storage and hosting by the hour, so that a company never has to buy a server. An operating system maker sells the software between the server and the app, the enterprise Linux that most servers run, the virtualisation that turns one machine into many, and the Kubernetes platforms that run containers. This Industry Vertical holds the developer clouds and hosting companies below the giant cloud providers, and the makers of the operating systems and platforms underneath.

Almost all of this software is open source, which makes the business unusual. Anyone can download it for free, so the companies here sell subscriptions, support and the hard engineering that keeps it running. India is one of the main places that engineering is done. Red Hat and Canonical have made India one of their largest engineering bases anywhere, Red Hat mostly in Pune and Bengaluru, and Nutanix, Wind River and Azul build here too.

For an engineer, this is work on the software other software depends on. Much of it is systems code in C and C++, in the Linux kernel, the hypervisor and the storage layer, and much of it is cloud and DevOps work in Go, building the platform itself rather than using it. Because the code is open, an engineer's work here is often public.

Cloud providers and OS makers is one of the Industry Verticals of Domain II, Cloud platforms and developer tools. Every company named on this page has posted software engineering jobs in India.

The two Market Segments

The Market Segments go from the cloud an app is rented on down to the operating system and platforms it runs on.

Cloud infrastructure and web hosting providers.

Developer clouds, the software that runs sovereign and edge clouds, and domain and web hosting come from companies like DigitalOcean, Coredge.io, MontyCloud, Newfold Digital and Bluehost.

Enterprise Linux and private cloud platforms.

Enterprise Linux, virtualisation and the Kubernetes platforms a company runs its own cloud on come from companies like Red Hat, Canonical, Nutanix, Wind River and Mirantis.

Who they hire

What cloud providers and OS makers hire software engineers for, and which roles they hire, is on the Cloud providers and OS makers hiring page.

That is Cloud providers and OS makers, the layers beneath every app, rented by the hour or run on a company's own machines.
