HR, payroll and workforce management software Keeping the employee record and paying every salary on time, the core of the people department Picture a hospital with 2,000 staff: doctors, nurses, technicians, cleaners and clerks. Each of them exists as a record in one system. The record holds a start date, a manager, a salary, a leave balance and tax details. On the last working day of every month, that system produces 2,000 payslips, without fail.

That system is where Industry Vertical 12, HR tech, begins. Keeping the employee record is called core HR. Paying people from it is called payroll. Payroll is the one piece of company software whose failure everyone notices by lunchtime. That is why the companies that run it are large, old and careful. This Market Segment has the most job postings in Industry Vertical 12, and one of the most in the whole collection.

Its buyers are employers of every size. The companies here are arranged by the size of the employer they serve, in three sub-segments:

The American payroll and HR suite: platforms that pay much of the United States, and build a large share of their software in India. Scheduling the shift: software that decides who works when, in a shop, a warehouse or a hospital. This is called workforce management. India's own HR suites: Indian companies that pay India's mid-sized and small firms.

Two facts shape this Market Segment:

The two largest centres are IndianRippling's centre in Bengaluru and UKG's in Noida are each among the largest engineering centres their companies have anywhere. Between them, they have two-thirds of this Market Segment's job postings. The global leaders are not hereADP, the largest payroll company in the world, is not covered in this Market Segment. Nor are SAP SuccessFactors and Oracle HCM, the two suites that run the world's largest companies. (More on SAP in Market Segment 10.1, ERP and business accounting software, in Industry Vertical 10, ERP and business automation.) So this Market Segment covers America's mid-sized employers and India's own companies, not the global top.

Every company named here has posted software engineering jobs in India. Famous companies that don't actively hire software engineers in India are left out.

The American payroll and HR suite Human capital management, payroll and tax filing, benefits and time, professional employer organisation platforms

Take the hospital from the start of this Market Segment, and put it in the United States. It probably pays its staff through one of the suites below. Much of that software is written in India. The industry calls these suites human capital management, or HCM. Beside pay, they handle tax filing, benefits such as health insurance, and time and attendance: recording when each person works.

Ripplingwith engineers in Bengaluru, has the most job postings in this Market Segment. It was founded in 2016 on one idea: the employee record should drive everything else. That means the payroll, the benefits, the laptop, the software access and the company credit card. It has become a platform that runs all of a company's administration. Its Bengaluru centre, opened in 2022, is a large share of the company. (It also appears in Market Segment 11.1, Procurement and source-to-pay software, in Industry Vertical 11, Finance and accounting software, for its spend-management product. And it appears in Market Segment 16.2, Virtual desktops (VDI) and digital employee experience, in Industry Vertical 16, IT management and workplace tools, for managing the laptop.) UKGhas engineers in Noida, Pune and Bengaluru, and the second most job postings here. It was formed when Ultimate Software and Kronos merged. It sells an HR and payroll suite to large employers. It also sells the time-and-attendance system that Kronos built for shift workers. Its Noida centre is its largest outside the United States. Workdaywith engineers in Chennai and Pune, is the suite of the largest companies. Most Fortune 500 companies, the 500 largest in America, keep their people and their money in it. Its Chennai centre is among its largest. (Its finance products also appear in Market Segment 11.3, Financial close, FP&A and tax software, in Industry Vertical 11, Finance and accounting software.) In Rippling's idea, the employee record is the root: payroll, benefits, the laptop, software access and the company credit card all follow from it.In Rippling's idea, the employee record is the root: payroll, benefits, the laptop, software access and the company credit card all follow from it.

The second tier serves America's mid-sized and small businesses. Each of these companies has chosen India for its engineering.

Two sell to, and through, professional employer organisations. A professional employer organisation, or PEO, becomes the legal employer of a small company's staff, and runs their payroll and benefits for it.

Four sell their payroll-and-HR platform directly to mid-sized employers:

Rippling's idea is that the employee record is the root from which everything else follows: devices, access, spending and pay. That is the frontier of this sub-segment, and every suite here is moving towards it. The next step is the same idea taken further: an AI assistant that answers each employee's questions, and an AI agent that runs a new joiner's first week.

Scheduling the shift Workforce management, employee scheduling, demand forecasting and labour budgeting

Back to the hospital from the start of this Market Segment. Its nurses work in shifts. The hard problem is not paying them, but deciding who works when. The schedule has to match three things:

A shift schedule has to match a forecast of how busy each ward will be, the hours labour law allows each nurse to work, and the money set aside for wages.A shift schedule has to match a forecast of how busy each ward will be, the hours labour law allows each nurse to work, and the money set aside for wages.
  • a forecast of how busy each ward will be
  • the hours each nurse is allowed to work under labour law
  • the money set aside for wages, called the labour budget

Every shop, restaurant and warehouse faces the same problem.

Legion Technologieswith job postings in Bengaluru and Pune, sells workforce management built on a forecast. Its model predicts demand, then produces the schedule and the labour budget for retailers and restaurants. Atoss Softwarethe German workforce-management company, has engineers in Bengaluru.

Both compete with UKG's Kronos products, the established name, in the first sub-segment.

Now picture the same hospital in Hyderabad. It pays its staff in rupees, under Indian tax rules, with provident fund and other deductions taken from each salary. The companies in this sub-segment pay India. Indian HR software is often called an HRMS, short for HR management system.

Keka HRfounded in Hyderabad, with engineers there and in Bengaluru, is the largest Indian HR suite in this Market Segment. It sells payroll, attendance, leave and hiring software to mid-sized Indian companies. greytHRfrom Bengaluru, is the older one. It has run the payroll of small and mid-sized Indian companies since before the cloud. peopleHumwith job postings in Bengaluru and Mumbai, sells the same kind of suite, with its performance and hiring modules at the front. PagarBookin Bengaluru, is the attendance-and-payroll app for the small shop and the contractor, run from a phone. TalentMicrowith job postings in Bengaluru and Delhi, presents itself as an HR-software company. Citytech Software Private Limitedwith engineers in Kolkata, sells Paylite HRMS, an HR and payroll system. Most of its business is building custom software for clients. So the hospital from the start of this Market Segment, whether in Ohio or in Hyderabad, runs on the same three things. It needs a record of every employee, a schedule of who works when, and a payroll that pays them all on the last working day of the month.
