Lead generation is the work of finding the companies that might buy a product, the person in each company who decides, and the moment when they are ready. A lead is a possible customer. In B2B sales, the possible customer is a company, which the industry calls an account.
Before a salesperson calls anyone, four questions need answers. Which companies might buy? Who decides in each company? How can that person be reached? And which of these companies is looking to buy this month? The products in this zone answer these questions, roughly in that order.
A B2B contact database answers the first three. It holds millions of business people, with their job titles, their companies, and their work emails and phone numbers. It is sold by the seat, which means the buyer pays for each salesperson who uses it. The page on SaaS pricing models explains this. Some databases also record which software each company already runs. This data is called technographics.
Intent data answers the fourth question. It collects signals that suggest a company has started to look for a product. Examples are a sudden burst of reading on a topic, visits to comparison pages on review sites, or a new job posting.
Account-based marketing (ABM) uses both. The company picks a few hundred target accounts, and aims its ads, emails and sales calls only at them. One source of new names is content syndication: the vendor's report is published on a publisher's website, and the vendor pays for the details of each person who downloads it. When a new lead arrives from any source, lead enrichment and routing cleans it and sends it to the right salesperson.
Imagine a Nagpur company that sells software to manage school buses. A database gives it 3,000 private schools in Maharashtra, and the name of each school's administrator. Intent data shows that 40 of these schools have been reading about bus tracking this month. The sales team calls those 40 first.
All this data is about real people. India's Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act sets rules on how such personal data may be collected and used.
