Lead enrichment and routing is the software that cleans each new lead as it arrives, fills in its missing details, scores it and sends it to the right salesperson. A lead is a possible customer who has shown interest, for example by filling in a form on a website. Enrichment is the industry's word for filling in the missing details.
Leads arrive from many places: website forms, events, webinars, purchased lists and content syndication, where a vendor buys the details of people who downloaded its report. They also arrive in different shapes. One form gives only a name and a personal email. A purchased list spells the same company in three different ways. Without cleaning, the CRM fills up with duplicates and half-empty records, and salespeople stop trusting it.
The software does four jobs, in order. First, it checks for duplicates: is this person, or this company, already in the CRM? Second, it enriches the record. It looks up the company's size, industry and location, often in a B2B contact database. Third, it scores the lead. A score is a number, often from 0 to 100, that estimates how likely the lead is to buy. The sales team sets the rules for the score, such as job title, company size and what the person did on the website. Fourth, it routes the lead. Routing rules decide which salesperson gets it, by region, industry, company size or whose turn it is.
Here is a typical case. An Ahmedabad company sells sensors that warn factories before a machine breaks down. At 11:02 a.m., a visitor fills in the form on its website and asks for a price. The form says "R. Mehta, Plant Head", with a work email at a tyre company. The software finds that the tyre company is already in the CRM, with a deal from last year that did not close. So it attaches the new lead to that existing account, instead of creating a second one. It adds the company's size, 1,800 employees, and the plant's location, Bharuch. The score comes to 82 out of 100, because the person is a plant head at a large manufacturer and asked for a price. Leads above 70 go straight to a salesperson. The routing rules send Gujarat manufacturers with more than 1,000 employees to the west-region executive who already owns the account. She receives an alert at 11:04 a.m.
Speed matters here. A lead who gets a call within minutes is much more likely to answer than one who is called the next day. So routing runs as soon as the lead arrives, not once a night. Some companies go further, and let AI lead qualification reply to the lead within a minute, before any salesperson does.
