A customer data platform (CDP) is software that collects what each customer does on a company's website, in its app and at its branches or stores, and joins it into one live profile per customer. Marketing teams then use these profiles to choose who receives which message. Banks, insurers, retailers and consumer apps use CDPs.
A company keeps customer records in many systems. The website knows a browser by its cookie. The app knows a phone by its device identifier. The billing or branch system knows a customer by an account number and a phone number. A CDP receives a stream of events from all of these systems. An event is a short record of one action, such as "viewed the home loan page". Whenever two records share an exact identifier, such as the same customer ID or phone number, the CDP joins them. This is called identity resolution.
The profile is updated in real time, which means within seconds of each action. So the next message can respond to what the customer did a minute ago, not last month.
Consider a private bank with 80 lakh customers. On Saturday, a salaried customer uses the home loan EMI calculator on the bank's website, without logging in. The CDP records three visits against a cookie. On Monday, she logs in to net banking from the same browser. Now the CDP knows the cookie belongs to her, and adds the three visits to her profile. Her profile also shows that a salary of about ₹95,000 is credited every month. The marketing team has built an audience: customers with a salary above ₹75,000 who looked at home loans this week. She enters it at once. The CDP sends the audience to the customer engagement platform, which shows her a pre-approved home loan offer in the bank's app. The branch relationship manager sees the same note when she next visits.
A bank must also be careful about what it may use. Under India's DPDP Act, the bank needs her consent to use her data for marketing. This duty applies from 13 May 2027. The CDP checks the consent record, often kept in privacy management software, before it includes anyone in an audience.
How is a CDP different from a CRM? A CRM holds the contacts and deals that salespeople enter by hand. A CDP collects behaviour automatically, from every channel. And how is it different from a data warehouse? A warehouse stores all of a company's data so that analysts can ask questions about the past. A CDP is built for marketing, and acts on each customer within seconds. Some CDPs, called composable CDPs, keep no copy of their own, and work directly on the warehouse.
