Three ways to find what went wrong
Each box is one way of finding the problem, in the order it happens in a network's life.
Box 1 happens before the network goes live. Boxes 2 and 3 work while it runs: box 2 copies the traffic, and box 3 turns that copy and other data into an answer. Tap a title in the diagram to jump to its companies.
Network test instruments 3 companies
Before a new fibre route, tower or router goes live, engineers test it. Field engineers carry handheld instruments, and equipment makers use larger instruments in their labs. Some instruments stay inside the live network and keep measuring it.
VIAVI SolutionsVIAVI Solutions makes test instruments for fibre and for telecom operators' networks, from handheld meters to lab equipment. It also sells software that reads what its instruments measure.ChennaiHiring now

To see what is flowing on a link, a device called a tap makes an exact copy of the traffic, and the live traffic carries on untouched. A packet broker then sends each part of the copy to the tools that need it: monitoring, security or analytics.
Monitoring and analysis software 5 companies
When something goes wrong, engineers have to find the cause quickly. Each of these companies answers a different question about the network.
Forward NetworksForward Networks builds a digital copy of an organisation's whole network. Engineers use it to check what the network will really do with any piece of traffic, before and after they change it.Bengaluru
Riverbed TechnologyRiverbed Technology makes software that shows whether an app is slow for its users, and where along the path the delay happens.
TEOCOTEOCO makes analytics software for telecom operators. It shows how an operator's network is performing, and where calls and data are failing.
RedSeal Inc.RedSeal maps an organisation's network to show where an attacker could get in, and how far the attacker could go from there.See alsoVulnerability management and penetration testing
SelectorSelector uses AI to link thousands of alerts from a network and find the one fault that caused them.See alsoObservability and monitoring platformsWhat's changing
Networks are starting to explain their own faults.
Until now, engineers have collected data from many tools and worked out the cause of a fault themselves. Newer software, such as Selector's, uses AI to read the alerts and suggest the cause. Network models, such as Forward Networks', let engineers ask the network what it will do before they change it. The aim is a network that reports what is wrong, and why, by itself.
