Routers you buy yourself 1 company

Some people buy their own Wi-Fi router, often to get a stronger signal in every room. A mesh system uses two or more units placed around the home, which work together as one Wi-Fi network. In India this is less common, because the box that the provider installs usually includes Wi-Fi.

Home Wi-Fi software for internet providers 2 companies

In most Indian homes, the fibre ends in one box that the provider installed, called a home gateway, and this box is also the Wi-Fi router. The provider runs software on it and manages it from the provider's own cloud. With this software, the provider can fix a weak Wi-Fi signal or a slow connection without sending a technician.

Plume logoPlumePlume makes the software that runs the Wi-Fi on providers' home gateways. Providers sell it to their customers under their own brand names, and it runs in tens of millions of homes.
Airties logoAirtiesAirties is a company from Turkey. It makes mesh Wi-Fi units and home-network software, and sells them to internet providers rather than to households.

What's changing

Providers now look after the Wi-Fi inside your home.

Until recently, a provider's job ended at the box on your wall, and the Wi-Fi inside your home was your own problem. Now providers watch their home gateways from their cloud. They can see when the Wi-Fi is weak in one room, and offer an extra mesh unit or a faster plan. Some providers also add services, such as parental controls and security, to the same box.
