Marketing automation and customer engagement platforms Software that decides who gets which message, on which channel, at what moment Think of the last time you added something to the basket of a shopping app, and closed the app without buying. Say it was a pair of running shoes. That evening, a push notification arrived: the price has dropped. The next morning, an email: your basket is waiting. On your birthday, a text message with a discount code.

No person at the shop sent these. Software did. It decided who gets which message, on which channel, at what moment. Then it measured whether the message worked: did you open it, did you come back, did you buy? This software is called marketing automation. For a consumer app with ten million users, it is how the company speaks to almost all of them.

Industry Vertical 13, Martech, follows the customer from a stranger to a regular. This Market Segment is where it begins, with the software that sends the message.

Every company named here has posted software engineering jobs in India. Famous companies that don't actively hire software engineers in India are left out.

This Market Segment has three sub-segments, grouped by who is sending the message:

The consumer brand's engagement platform: for consumer apps and retailers that message millions of users. India has built three of the main companies in this group. The small business and the business-to-business marketer: for local businesses and their agencies, and for companies that sell to other companies. The agent and the page: the newest companies, which let an AI model choose the message and build the page it leads to.

The consumer brand's engagement platform Omnichannel engagement, journey orchestration, push, email and in-app messaging, mobile marketing

Take the running shoes from the start of this Market Segment. The shopping app did not build the software that sent you those messages. It bought it from a company that sells an engagement platform. The platform does three jobs:

An engagement platform sorts users into groups, runs the planned journey of messages for each group, and sends them on every channel, then tracks whether each person opened, came back or bought. An engagement platform sorts users into groups, runs the planned journey of messages for each group, and sends them on every channel, then tracks whether each person opened, came back or bought. It sorts the users into groupssuch as everyone who left something in the basket this week. This is called segmentation. It runs the journeythe planned sequence of messages each group gets. For example, a push notification tonight, then an email tomorrow if the push is ignored. A marketer draws the journey on a screen, like a flowchart. Running it is called journey orchestration. It sends the messages on every channelsuch as push, email, SMS and messages inside the app, and tracks what each person did next. Doing all of this from one platform is called omnichannel engagement.

This is where India's own companies compete with the rest of the world. Three of them started in India:

MoEngagewas founded in Bengaluru, and hires there. It sells its customer-engagement platform to consumer brands and fintechs across Asia, the Middle East and the United States. The platform analyses the users to sort them into groups, and runs the journeys. An AI model called Sherpa picks the channel and the moment for each message. WebEngagefrom Mumbai, sells the same kind of journey designer. It comes with a customer data platform built in: one place that holds everything the company knows about each customer. (More on customer data platforms in Market Segment 13.3, Customer data platforms (CDP) and identity resolution.) WebEngage hires in Mumbai and Bengaluru. Netcore Cloudalso from Mumbai, is the oldest of the three. It came to engagement from email delivery. It still sends email at enormous volume for Indian businesses.

Three more companies sell engagement from different starting points:

Karixwas Tanla's messaging brand for retail businesses. It sells campaign management, SMS, voice and push messages, and the one-time passwords (OTPs) of Indian companies. (More on the messaging companies underneath in Market Segment 2.1, CPaaS and business messaging, in Industry Vertical 2, Business communications.) Karix hires in Bengaluru. Zeta Globalis an American data-driven marketing company. Its platform pairs the engagement engine with an identity graph of hundreds of millions of consumers. An identity graph links the email addresses, phone numbers and devices that belong to the same person. (It also appears in Market Segment 13.3, Customer data platforms (CDP) and identity resolution.) Zeta Global hires in Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Micoworksis a Japanese company. It sells marketing and customer engagement over LINE, the messaging app that is to Japan what WhatsApp is to India. It hires in Bengaluru.

The largest brands mostly buy from two companies covered mainly in other Market Segments. Their products are the standard for big companies:

Adobesells Journey Optimizer, and the rest of its Experience Cloud, to the largest brands. It hires in Bengaluru and Delhi NCR, more than any other company here. (More on Adobe in Market Segment 13.5, Creative tools, event platforms and creator marketing.) Salesforcesells Marketing Cloud, the email and journey platform built on ExactTarget. It hires in Hyderabad and Bengaluru. (More on Salesforce in Market Segment 14.1, CRM software, in Industry Vertical 14, CRM and sales tech.) The journey decided by a model.

Until now, the engagement platform's product was the journey a marketer drew. Now an AI model draws it. For each user, it chooses the message, the channel and the moment. MoEngage's Sherpa and Netcore's AI products are the Indian versions of what Braze, Adobe and Salesforce are selling.

Until now a marketer drew the journey for each group of users, and now an AI model chooses the message, the channel and the moment for each user.Until now a marketer drew the journey for each group of users, and now an AI model chooses the message, the channel and the moment for each user.
The small business and the business-to-business marketer All-in-one marketing platforms for agencies and small businesses, business-to-business (B2B) marketing automation, distributed and channel marketing

The running shoes came from a big app with millions of users and a marketing team. Now take a dentist in Pune with one clinic and no marketing team. The clinic pays a local marketing agency. The agency runs the clinic's marketing, and many other clients' too, on one all-in-one platform.

HighLevelis the surprise of this market. It sells an all-in-one marketing platform. It includes a CRM (customer relationship management system), the list of customers and every contact with them. It also has a funnel builder, which makes the web pages that lead a visitor step by step from an advertisement to a booking. And it has email and text campaigns, and a booking calendar. HighLevel sells mostly to marketing agencies. They run it for dentists, gyms and other local businesses, under the agency's own brand. HighLevel's Delhi centre is a large share of the company.

A company that sells to other companies markets itself differently. Take a company that sells accounting software to businesses. Someone signs up for a free trial. That person is now a lead: a possible customer. The company sends them a sequence of emails over the next few weeks, to turn the trial into a sale.

Inflection.ioa small Bengaluru company, sells marketing automation built for business-to-business software companies. It runs the lifecycle campaigns, the planned emails and messages, that nurture a lead until a salesperson can call. Ansirasells a distributed-marketing platform. Through it, a brand runs local marketing for its dealers, franchisees and channel partners, the local businesses that sell its products. The platform handles the local advertisements. It also handles the co-op funds, the money a brand shares with its dealers to pay for local marketing. Ansira hires in Bengaluru, Pune and Delhi.

One company here is covered mainly in another Market Segment:

HubSpotsells Marketing Hub, the best-known marketing product for small businesses. It hires in Bengaluru. (More on HubSpot in Market Segment 14.1, CRM software, in Industry Vertical 14, CRM and sales tech.)

Two other well-known marketing tools now belong to larger companies. Marketo is part of Adobe, named in the first sub-segment. Mailchimp is part of Intuit. (More on Intuit in Market Segment 20.6, Stock trading apps and personal finance, in Industry Vertical 20, Wealthtech and capital markets.) ActiveCampaign and Brevo are not covered in this Market Segment.

Back to the running shoes from the start of this Market Segment. In the first sub-segment, a marketer drew the journey that sent you those messages. In this sub-segment, an AI agent decides it. An AI agent is software that makes decisions and acts on them by itself, then learns from the result. This is the youngest group here, and the most Indian.

Auxiasells an agentic marketing platform. An AI model decides the treatment for each customer: which offer, which message, and when. The model is trained on the company's own first-party data, meaning the data it collected itself, from its own app and website. It then learns from what each customer did. It is the journey, without a marketer drawing it. Auxia hires in Bengaluru. MarketEngine.aia Pune company, presents itself as an AI marketing platform.

Three small Bengaluru companies work on what happens after the click. Say an advertisement for the running shoes brings you to the shop's website. (More on buying that advertisement in Market Segment 34.1, Ad buying platforms (DSPs) and ad networks, in Industry Vertical 34, Adtech.)

Convertcartsells conversion-rate optimisation to online stores. It tests and personalises the store's pages, so that more visitors become buyers. The share of visitors who buy is called the conversion rate. Fermatbuilds the post-click page: the landing page a shopper arrives on from an advertisement. It also runs experiments on that page, trying different versions to see which one sells more. Breakoutsells an AI agent that sits on a company's website. It answers the visitor's questions. It also qualifies the lead, meaning it checks whether the visitor is likely to buy, before passing them on to the CRM.

One company here works for banks instead:

Naehassells banks a system that keeps their marketing offers accurate and compliant, meaning they follow the rules set by regulators. (More on Naehas in Market Segment 11.4, Regulatory compliance software, in Industry Vertical 11, Finance and accounting software.) That is the software that sends the message. A big shopping app uses an engagement platform to chase the running shoes left in your basket. A dentist's agency runs the clinic's marketing on an all-in-one platform. And more and more, an AI model decides the message, and builds the page it leads to.
