Online mock tests are full practice exams, taken online under the same conditions as the real exam, that are scored and ranked against every student who took the same test. They tell each student roughly where they would stand in the real exam, months before it. They are a part of every online coaching platform.

A mock test copies the real exam closely: the same number of questions, the same marking, the same time limit and the same kind of screen. JEE Main and many other entrance exams are taken on a computer. So a mock test on a computer or phone is also practice for the real screen.

Consider a student in Bareilly who sits an all-India JEE Main mock test on a Sunday morning. It has 75 questions, 25 each in physics, chemistry and mathematics, for 300 marks, in three hours. A correct answer earns 4 marks, and a wrong answer loses 1 mark. He answers 68 questions: 48 correctly and 20 wrongly. He leaves 7 blank. So his score is 48 × 4 − 20 × 1, which is 192 − 20 = 172 out of 300.

That Sunday, 1,20,000 students sit the same test at the same time. Most of them submit their answers in the last few minutes, so the platform must be able to accept them all at once. Within an hour, it scores everyone and ranks them. His rank is 9,850. That means about 91.8% of the students scored less than he did. This figure is called his percentile. The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts JEE Main, reports results as percentiles, so the mock test does too.

The analysis then shows him more than his score. He scored 64 in mathematics and 64 in chemistry, but only 44 in physics. In physics, he lost 12 marks on wrong answers in one chapter, rotational motion. So the platform builds his next week's practice from the question bank, with more questions on rotational motion, at a level just above his current one. Choosing the next questions from a learner's last answers is called adaptive learning. If he does not understand a solution, he can ask AI doubt solving to explain it.

Why rank against everyone? A competitive exam is decided by rank, not marks. A score of 172 means little on its own. A rank among lakhs of students shows whether he is on track for the colleges he wants. For the same reason, coaching companies run very large mock tests, open even to students outside their own batches. Large mock tests that award scholarships sometimes use online proctoring to stop cheating.
