A loan origination system (LOS) is the software that runs a loan from the application to the approval and the payout of the money. Origination means everything from the application to the payout of the money. Many lending systems also manage the loan afterwards, through repayment to closure. That part is often called a loan management system (LMS).
An LOS moves each application through a series of stages. It collects the borrower's details and documents. It runs KYC, the identity check, often through an identity verification service. It asks the credit decision engine for a decision. It produces the sanction letter, the lender's formal offer, and the loan agreement. The borrower signs the agreement digitally, and the stamp duty on it is paid online through e-stamping. The borrower also sets up an e-mandate, a standing instruction that lets the lender collect each EMI from the bank account automatically. Finally, the LOS sends the loan to the bank's core banking system, which records it and pays out the money.
Consider a two-wheeler loan at a dealership in Patna. A buyer chooses a ₹1.1 lakh scooter and wants to borrow ₹90,000. The dealer's sales executive opens the lender's app on a tablet. He scans the buyer's PAN and Aadhaar, and the buyer completes a video KYC call. The decision engine approves ₹90,000 at 12% interest for 24 months, an EMI of about ₹4,240. The buyer signs on the tablet, the e-mandate is set up, and the lender pays the dealer the same afternoon. The LOS records every step, with the time, for the lender's auditors.
Under RBI rules, the lender must also show each borrower a key fact statement before the loan is signed. It lists the interest rate, all fees and the total cost of the loan in a standard format. The LOS produces it.
An LOS is sold in two ways. A bank can buy it white-labelled, which means it appears under the bank's own name. Or a fintech can use it as APIs: connections that the fintech's own app calls to run each stage. Offering a loan inside another company's app in this way is called embedded finance. Lenders set up an LOS differently for each kind of loan, from an instant personal loan app to a gold loan or MSME loans. If a borrower later stops paying, the loan passes to debt collection software.
