Apartment society management is the software used to run a gated housing society in India: its gate, its money, its shared facilities, and its notices and complaints. Millions of urban Indians live in such societies, from a 60-flat building to a township of several thousand flats.

Who runs a society? The flats are usually owned by the residents. The owners elect a managing committee, often through a residents' welfare association (RWA) or a registered cooperative housing society. The committee members are volunteers. They hire the guards, the housekeeping staff and the maintenance staff, often through a facility-management company. Every flat pays a monthly maintenance charge to cover these costs.

Most of this runs on one society management app. The committee chooses the app, and every resident and guard installs it. Its best-known part is the visitor management system: the guard logs a delivery at the gate, and the resident taps Approve on a phone. Another part is maintenance billing and accounting. Each flat's charge is billed and paid in the app, often by UPI, and the committee keeps the society's accounts there. Complaints, such as a broken lift, are logged and tracked to completion like a work order.

The second product here is a resident services platform. It sells cleaning, laundry and repairs to the residents of apartment buildings, and reaches them through the building's landlord. That model is American, because large American apartment buildings are usually owned by one landlord. In India, residents book such services themselves on a home-services app, or through offers inside the society app.

The gate data raises a question of privacy. The app records every visitor, every delivery, and when each domestic worker comes and goes. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act requires that such personal data is collected with notice, used only for its stated purpose and kept safe.

Running a society is a smaller version of running any building. Offices and rented apartment blocks use facility and property management software.
