Servers and storage 3 companies

These companies make the general-purpose servers and storage that fill most data centres. Their Indian centres in Bengaluru and Pune work mostly on firmware, the basic software stored on the server itself, and on the software that manages the servers.

Its Bengaluru site is one of its largest engineering centres anywhere, and most of the work there is on firmware and systems software. HPE also owns the networking companies Aruba and Juniper.BengaluruHiring now

AI clusters and the equipment around them 3 companies

An AI cluster is thousands of GPUs, the chips that train and run AI models, working together on one job like one giant machine. Building one takes more than servers: a network has to link all the GPUs, and the racks need far more power and liquid cooling. Some companies build and run the whole cluster; others supply one of these parts.

Penguin Solutions logoPenguin SolutionsPenguin Solutions designs and builds AI and supercomputing clusters for customers who do not want to put them together from parts, and manages them after they are installed. It includes the former Penguin Computing.BengaluruHired recently
Nexthop AI logoNexthop AINexthop AI is a start-up that builds the network switches for AI clusters, working closely with the largest cloud companies. Its switches run SONiC, the free network operating system that Microsoft first wrote for its own data centres.
Vertiv logoVertivVertiv makes power and cooling equipment for data centres: the equipment that carries power to each rack, the batteries that keep servers running until the generators start (UPS), and the liquid cooling that AI racks need. Much of it is designed at its engineering centre in Pune.PuneHiring nowSee alsoBuilding technology and HVAC

What's changing

Companies now buy a whole rack, not single servers.

For AI, the unit that companies buy is no longer one server. It is a whole rack, with its servers, network switches, power and liquid cooling designed to work together, and sometimes a whole row of racks. This favours companies that can design and deliver the complete rack, such as Penguin Solutions and the large server makers.
