Space in shared data centres (colocation) 1 company

Many data centres rent out space to other companies: a rack, a locked cage of racks or a whole room. The companies renting the space bring their own servers. This is called colocation. Guards, cameras and locked cages keep each company's servers apart.

Equinix logoEquinixEquinix is the world's largest colocation company. What it really sells is the neighbours: cloud providers, telecom operators and internet exchanges, where networks swap traffic, already have their equipment in Equinix buildings. A short cable across the hall to them is faster and cheaper than a connection over the internet.BengaluruHiring now

Data centres in shipping containers 1 company

Some places are far from any data centre and have no fast connection to one, such as a remote mine. A data centre built inside a shipping container can be taken to a place like that.

What's changing

Data centres are being redesigned for AI.

A rack of AI chips uses many times the electricity of an ordinary rack of servers, and it gives off so much heat that air cannot cool it, so cold liquid has to be piped right up to the chips. Data centres are therefore being redesigned from the floor up. Operators used to choose sites near fibre first. Now they choose sites with plenty of electricity first.
