Point of sale (POS) The shop counter, where a payment is taken in person Go back to the café in Pune from Market Segment 17.1. You tapped your card on a terminal, the card machine on the counter. That terminal is only one part of what sits on the counter. The café also has a screen where the staff enter your order. It prints the bill, and it knows the menu and the prices. Together, this is the point of sale, or POS: the place where a shop takes the payment in person.

More and more, the point of sale is software. It includes:

  • the billing screen that records each order
  • the menu
  • the stock
  • the loyalty scheme

This software is sold together with the payment processing, and the fees on the payments pay for all of it. (More on payment processing in Market Segment 17.1, Card networks and payment processing.)

This Market Segment looks at the counter from the payment's side. The retailer's side of the same counter is covered elsewhere. (More on it in Market Segment 27.3, Retail checkout and store systems, in Industry Vertical 27, Retail tech.)

Every company named here has posted software engineering jobs in India. Famous companies that don't actively hire software engineers in India are left out.

This is a small Market Segment. It covers five companies, and one more that is covered mainly in another Market Segment.

The terminal and the software around it

Back to the café's counter. Three companies here sell the terminal, the billing software, or both:

SpotOnwith engineers in Bengaluru, has the most job postings in this Market Segment. It sells a cloud point of sale to American restaurants and shops. It includes the billing screen, the handheld device a waiter carries to the table, and online ordering. The payment processing is built in. Cloveris the point of sale owned by Fiserv. It is the terminal and billing system of many American small businesses. It is sold through the banks that process their payments. Clover has engineers in Delhi NCR. Verifonewith engineers in Bengaluru, makes the terminals themselves, and the software that runs on them. It is one of the largest terminal makers in the world.

Two companies sell a business's whole software, with the payment inside it:

Xplor Technologieswith engineers in Pune, sells business software to gyms, studios and childcare centres. Its payment product, Xplor Pay, is built in. ABC Fitnesswith engineers in Hyderabad, sells club management and billing software to gym chains. It also sells Glofox, for smaller studios. It makes much of its money on the members' monthly payments.

One company here is covered mainly in another Market Segment:

Transact Campuswith engineers in Chennai, sells the campus card: the student's card that pays in the canteen and opens the hostel door. (More on it in Market Segment 42.3, School and university management software, in Industry Vertical 42, Edtech.) The phone as the terminal.

The terminal is becoming unnecessary. A phone can now accept a tapped card by itself. And a QR code accepts a UPI payment with no hardware at all. This is why India's shops moved from terminals to a printed QR code, and a small speaker that announces each payment. The hardware is no longer the product. So the companies here are selling the software around the payment.
