Retail checkout and store systems The checkout counter, where the bill is added up and paid, by a cashier or by the shopper At a supermarket in Hyderabad, the cashier scans your rice, soap and biscuits. The billing machine adds them up, takes your payment and prints the bill. In some stores, you scan the items yourself at a self-checkout kiosk. In a few, you scan them on your own phone as you shop.

In a physical store, this is where the software meets the customer. The industry calls the billing counter the point of sale, or POS. Behind it sits the store system, which holds the prices, the stock and the day's takings. The industry calls this the back office. The buyers are retailers of every size, from supermarket chains to fuel stations.

The counter and the back office: a staffed billing counter, a self-checkout kiosk or a scan-and-go phone app feeds the point of sale, which adds up the bill and takes payment, and the back office behind it holds the prices, the stock and the day's takings. The counter and the back office: a staffed billing counter, a self-checkout kiosk or a scan-and-go phone app feeds the point of sale, which adds up the bill and takes payment, and the back office behind it holds the prices, the stock and the day's takings.

Back to the supermarket counter from the start of this Market Segment. Here are the companies that make the machines and the software behind it.

PDI Technologiessells the software of convenience stores and fuel retailers. Convenience stores are small shops that stay open long hours, often at fuel stations. Its software runs the billing counter at the fuel station, the back office, the fuel prices and the loyalty scheme. Many of America's and Europe's chains use it. PDI has engineers in Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru, and the most job postings in this Market Segment. Diebold Nixdorfmakes self-checkouts and billing machines for retailers. It also makes ATMs. It has engineers in Mumbai and Hyderabad. (More on its ATMs in Market Segment 19.1, Core banking and banking as a service (BaaS), in Industry Vertical 19, Banking and regtech.) NCR Voyixsells the point of sale, the self-checkout and the store platform of retailers and restaurants. It is the half of NCR that remained after NCR's ATM business was split off, in 2023, as a separate company, NCR Atleos. NCR Voyix has engineers in Hyderabad and Chennai. Aptos Retailsells point of sale, order management and merchandising to specialty retailers, the shops that sell one kind of product, such as clothes or shoes. Merchandising means deciding which products to show and sell. Aptos has engineers in Bengaluru. It also owns Revionics. (More on Revionics in Market Segment 27.2, Retail pricing and merchandising analytics.) MostEdgesells the back office of American convenience stores. It has engineers in Hyderabad. MishiPaysells the scan-and-go app, with which shoppers scan and pay on their own phones. The store without a checkout.

Cameras and sensors that see what a shopper takes, and phones that scan as the shopper goes, make the checkout optional. Self-checkouts have already replaced many staffed counters. The next step is the checkout-free store, where the customer simply walks out and is charged. Retailers are weighing it against the theft and the mistakes it brings. (More on cameras in stores in Market Segment 27.4, Shelf monitoring and retail execution platforms.)

The checkout becomes optional: from the staffed counter to the self-checkout, to scanning on your own phone, to the checkout-free store where cameras see what you take and you are charged as you walk out.The checkout becomes optional: from the staffed counter to the self-checkout, to scanning on your own phone, to the checkout-free store where cameras see what you take and you are charged as you walk out. That is what happens at the supermarket counter. A billing machine or a self-checkout takes your payment, and the store system behind it updates the stock and the day's takings.
