A white-label streaming platform is a complete, ready-made streaming service that a company rents and puts its own name on. It includes the apps for phones and TVs, the video compression, the delivery, the piracy protection and the payments. The buyer adds its own logo, colours and videos, and its viewers see only the buyer's brand. White-label means that the product carries no label of its maker. It is also called a white-label OTT platform.
Who buys one? Broadcasters that want their own app without building a technology team. Regional TV channels that want to reach viewers who no longer have cable. Indian channels that want to reach Indians living abroad. And, in large numbers in India, teachers and coaching companies that sell video lessons and live online classes.
The platform assembles products that a large service would buy separately. It runs its own video encoder to make copies at several qualities. It sends them through a content delivery network (CDN). It protects them with video DRM and forensic watermarking. And it charges viewers through built-in subscription billing, usually by UPI or card. The buyer pays the platform a monthly fee, and often a charge for each hour of video watched.
Take, for example, a coaching institute in Kota that prepares students for the JEE engineering entrance exam. It has 20,000 students across India who pay ₹40,000 a year for an online course. It does not want to build an app. So it signs up with a white-label platform. Within a few weeks, its students download an app with the institute's name. Teachers upload 1,500 recorded lectures and run three live classes a day. Each lecture is encrypted, so it cannot be downloaded and shared. Each student's phone number is shown faintly across the video, so that a screen recording can be traced back to that student. When a student's payment fails, the billing system blocks the course until the fee is paid.
Why is piracy protection so important for coaching? A recorded lecture is easy to share in a messaging group. If one student shares a whole course, hundreds of others may never pay for it. The visible mark discourages this, and the invisible watermark identifies the student who leaked it.
How is it different from building a streaming service? A large service builds its own apps and buys each piece of technology separately, to control every detail. A white-label platform gives a smaller company the same pieces as one product, at the cost of less control. An online coaching platform is a business that sells courses itself; many smaller institutes use white-label platforms to compete with them.
