A sales engagement platform is software that runs each salesperson's planned series of emails, calls and messages to possible buyers, logs every reply in the CRM and tells the salesperson what to do next. The planned series is called a sequence or a cadence. With the platform, a sales team can contact thousands of people in a month without forgetting anyone.
Before these platforms, a salesperson kept follow-ups in a spreadsheet, or in their head. Many possible buyers never received the third email, because the salesperson forgot to send it. A sales engagement platform removes that problem. The team writes the sequence once, as a template. The platform then schedules each step for each contact, sends the emails and creates a task for every phone call.
Every morning, the salesperson opens a task list. It might say: "Call 18 people, send 40 follow-up emails and reply to 6 people who answered." The platform dials the calls from the browser and records the outcome of each. When someone replies, the platform stops the sequence for that person, so they do not receive the next automatic email. It writes every email, call and reply into the CRM, so the salesperson does not have to type it in.
The platform also measures what works. It can send two different subject lines to 500 contacts each, and show which one gets more replies. It shows which step in a sequence books the most meetings.
Consider a sales executive at a Kolkata company that sells stock management software to pharmacy chains across India. This week she has 60 new contacts from a B2B contact database: the owners and purchase heads of chains with 10 or more stores. She adds them to the company's "pharmacy owners" sequence. Day 1 is an email about running out of fast-selling medicines. Day 3 is a follow-up email. Day 5 is a phone call. Day 8 is a message on LinkedIn. Day 12 is a second call. Day 15 is the break-up email, which says she will stop writing. By day 15, 9 of the 60 have replied, and 4 have booked a demonstration. The platform shows that the day 5 call produced more meetings than any of the emails.
The newest platforms add AI. A language model drafts each email from what is known about the account. An AI SDR can now run a whole sequence on its own. The companies that make these platforms often also sell revenue intelligence, which forecasts sales, and conversation intelligence, which records and analyses sales calls.
Sending thousands of emails has a cost too. Email providers move a sender's emails to the spam folder when many people ignore or report them. So the platforms limit how many emails each mailbox sends in a day.
