A hospital operations platform is the software a hospital uses to run its back office: staff schedules, contracts with suppliers, purchases and compliance records. The patient never sees it. But without it, a hospital with thousands of staff and hundreds of suppliers cannot plan its days or prove that it follows the rules.

The platform usually has several modules, sold together. A staff scheduling module builds the shift rosters for nurses, technicians and doctors. It knows who is trained for which ward, and who is on leave. It is a hospital version of workforce management (WFM) software. A contracts module holds every agreement with suppliers, from the company that services the lifts to the company that sells implants. It warns before a contract ends or a price changes, as contract lifecycle management (CLM) software does in other industries. A compliance module records the hospital's policies, staff training, incident reports and audits. Inspectors ask for these records when the hospital applies for accreditation. Many platforms also include credentialing, the check on each doctor's licence and training.

Consider a chain of 12 hospitals across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, with its head office in Hyderabad. Every Monday, the platform forecasts how many patients each ward will have that week, from past admissions and the operations already booked. It shows that the cardiac ward of one hospital will need four more nurses on the night shifts of Wednesday and Thursday. It finds four nurses at a nearby hospital of the same chain who are trained for cardiac care and are not on duty on those nights. The nursing head approves the change, and the nurses receive their new shifts on their phones. In the same week, the contracts module warns that the supply contract for surgical gloves ends in 30 days, so the purchase team starts the renewal in time.

Buying is a large part of the work. A hospital buys thousands of different items, from gloves and syringes to artificial hips. Many American hospitals order them through an industry supply exchange, a shared network of hospitals and suppliers that carries catalogues, orders and invoices. The platform sends the orders and checks each invoice against the contract price.

The platform also supplies data to other systems. Operating room scheduling reads the nurses' rosters before it books a theatre team. In America, the compliance records must also show that the hospital protects patient data under HIPAA, the American health data privacy law, and many hospitals use HIPAA compliance software for this. The largest platforms were built for American hospitals. Some newer ones are built for Indian hospital chains, whose wards, insurers and rules are different.
