A homework help website is a library of explanations and worked answers to questions from textbooks and assignments, which students search when they are stuck. It is also called a study-help website. Most such sites are paid by subscription, and many follow a freemium model: a student sees part of an answer for free and pays to see the rest.
Where do the answers come from? There are three main sources. Subject experts, often teachers or postgraduate students, write answers to questions that students post, and are paid for each answer. Other students answer each other's questions. And some sites let students upload their own notes and solved papers, in return for access to other students' material. Today, many sites also produce an answer with an AI model within seconds.
Say a Class 11 student in Patna is stuck on a physics problem the night before a test. A ball is thrown straight up at 20 metres per second, and the question asks how high it goes. She types the question into the site's search box. The site finds a matching question with a worked answer. The first step is shown free: at the highest point, the ball's speed is zero. To see the rest, she must subscribe. The full answer uses the equation v² = u² − 2gh, with g as 9.8 metres per second squared, and finds a height of about 20.4 metres. A good answer also explains why each step is taken, so that she can solve the next problem herself.
The business depends on search. Students usually find these sites by typing their exact question into a search engine. So the sites hold millions of question pages, each written to appear in search results.
AI has changed this market more than any other part of education. A free AI chatbot can now explain a physics problem, step by step, in a few seconds. So homework help sites are adding their own AI tutors and stressing that their answers have been checked by experts. Checked answers matter, because an AI model can state a wrong step with confidence, a problem called AI hallucination.
Teachers worry about one more thing. A student who copies a worked answer for an assignment has not learned anything, and may be breaking the school's rules. The better sites show the method, not only the final number, and some offer practice questions without answers.
Some of these companies also sell tools for writing. A grammar checker and paraphrasing tool corrects a student's sentences and rewrites them in other words. How is a homework help site different from an online tutoring marketplace? A homework help site gives a written answer that already exists, or that is written later. A tutoring marketplace connects the student with a live tutor who explains in a conversation.
