A clinical trial data platform is software that gathers all the data of a clinical trial into one place, checks it and prepares it for analysis and for the regulator. It is also called a clinical data cloud or a clinical data management platform.
A large trial collects data from many separate systems. The hospitals type visit details into electronic data capture (EDC) forms. Patients fill in questionnaires on their phones through eCOA. A central laboratory sends blood test results. RTSM software records which patient received which medicine pack. Each system has its own format and its own way of naming patients and visits. Before anyone can analyse the trial, all of this must be matched, patient by patient and visit by visit.
Consider an asthma inhaler trial at 80 hospitals, with its data team in Bengaluru. Each night, the platform collects the new records from every source. It matches them by patient number and visit date. Then it runs hundreds of checks across the sources. One check finds that patient 0412 has a blood test dated two days before she signed her consent form. Another finds a patient whose diary shows an asthma attack that the hospital's form does not mention. The platform lists both problems for a data manager, an employee in the data management team. She sends a question, called a query, to each hospital. The hospital corrects the record or explains it.
When every query is closed, the data is frozen. This step is called database lock. After lock, nobody can change the data without a recorded reason. The locked data then goes to the statisticians, who compare the groups using the plan that clinical trial design software helped to write.
Every change on the platform is recorded with who made it, when and why. This is required by GxP rules, so that a regulator can check the record years later. Most platforms now run in the cloud, so that hospitals, data teams and regulators' reviewers in many countries can work on the same data. The documents of the trial are kept in a related store, the electronic trial master file (eTMF).
How is this different from EDC? EDC is the form in which one hospital records one patient's visit. The data platform brings together EDC and every other source, for the whole trial.
