An audiobook subscription is a plan in which you pay a monthly fee and can listen to a library of audiobooks, audio stories and courses on your phone. An audiobook is a book read aloud by a narrator, usually a professional voice artist and sometimes the author. Indian apps offer their libraries in many languages, such as Hindi, Kannada, Marathi and Bengali, as well as English.
There are two common kinds of plan. In an all-you-can-listen plan, you can listen to any title in the library for as long as you keep paying. In a credit plan, the monthly fee gives you one credit. You exchange the credit for one book, and you keep that book even after you cancel. Some apps combine the two. Paying one fee for a whole library is called SVOD in the media business. It is compared with ads and pay-per-item in AVOD, SVOD and TVOD.
Take, for example, a retired school principal in Mysuru who now finds long reading tiring for her eyes. She subscribes to an audiobook app for ₹99 a month. She listens to a 14-hour Kannada novel over two weeks, at 1.25 times the normal speed. The app remembers where she stopped on her phone. Before a bus journey to her daughter's home, she downloads three books, so that she can listen without mobile data. Her plan renews every month by UPI AutoPay. She approved the mandate once, and her bank debits ₹99 each month.
That renewal is run by subscription billing software. It handles free trials, failed payments and cancellations. Under RBI rules, the bank must notify the customer before each automatic debit.
How is the money shared? The app owns few of its books. It licenses the audio rights from publishers and authors. It pays narrators and studios to record the books. Then it pays each rights holder a royalty. On many subscription plans, the royalty is a share of the subscription money, divided by the minutes that listeners spent on each title. So a book that people finish earns more than one they stop after ten minutes.
Recording an audiobook takes a narrator many days in a studio. Speech and voice AI can now narrate a book in hours. This makes it affordable to record books for smaller languages, which have fewer listeners. Some apps label the titles that are narrated by AI. Because many Indians prefer to listen in their own language, these apps compete on languages more than on English titles, as described in the vernacular internet.
How is it different from an audio series app? An audio series is written for listening, runs to hundreds of episodes and is unlocked with coins, episode by episode. And a text-to-speech app reads any text aloud in a machine voice, while an audiobook is a finished recording that someone has produced.
