An AI shopping assistant is a chat inside a shopping app that finds products from a request written or spoken in your own words. It is also called a conversational shopping assistant. You describe what you want in Hindi, English or another Indian language. The assistant searches the store, compares the results, answers your questions and, in some apps, places the order for you.
A normal search box needs keywords. It works well for a buyer who knows the product's name and how to use filters. Many buyers in India's smaller towns have never typed a search. They can describe what they need, but not in the words that a product listing uses.
Take, for example, a shopper near Patna who taps the microphone and says this in Hindi: "Dadi ke liye garam shawl, 800 rupaye tak, jo machine mein dhul sake". This means "a warm shawl for my grandmother, up to ₹800, that can be washed in a machine". The assistant passes the request to a large language model (LLM), an AI model trained on huge amounts of text, which can read and write it. The model turns the sentence into a structured search: a shawl, for women, warm material such as wool, a price below ₹800, and machine-washable. It sends this search to the store's search and recommendations software, which returns the matching shawls.
The assistant then shows three shawls, priced at ₹549, ₹690 and ₹780. It explains in Hindi how they differ, taking the facts from each listing and from buyers' reviews. The shopper asks whether the cheapest one is itchy. The assistant answers from what reviewers have written about that shawl. The shopper adds the ₹690 shawl to the cart and pays. The order then goes to the online marketplace like any other.
An assistant can give a wrong answer, for example about a material that the listing never mentions. So well-built assistants answer only from the store's own product data and reviews, and they show where each answer came from.
The next step is an assistant that buys on its own. You tell it to reorder detergent when the pack runs out, and it does. This is called agentic commerce. The agent needs your permission and a payment method with a spending limit, which agentic payments provide. Some assistants also compare prices for the same product across several marketplaces.
How is an AI shopping assistant different from a customer-service chatbot? A customer-service bot answers questions about an order already placed, such as a late delivery. A shopping assistant helps you decide what to buy. Both are forms of conversational commerce.
