Many online schools join one accredited institution; it reviews each school's teachers, curriculum and exams, and awards the degree when a student completes 90 credits.

An accredited degree federation is one accredited higher-education institution that many independent schools join, so that each school can award recognised degrees through it, instead of seeking accreditation on its own. The best-known example is accredited in Malta, a member of the European Union. Its degrees follow the European rules for higher education.

Why is this needed? A degree counts only if it is awarded by an institution that an official body has checked and recognised. This is called accreditation. For a new school, becoming accredited on its own takes years. It must show qualified teachers, a fixed curriculum, fair exams and proper records. A small online school can rarely wait that long.

In a federation, each school joins the accredited institution as a member college. The federation sets the rules: what each course must teach, how students are assessed, what qualifications the teachers must have, and how records are kept. It then checks each member's work against these rules. Students who complete a programme receive a degree from the federation. Their courses, assignments and marks are kept on one shared learning management system (LMS), so that the federation and the regulator can inspect them.

Here is a typical case. An online coding school in Bengaluru wants to offer a master's degree in computer science to students in many countries. It joins the federation. The federation reviews the school's teachers, curriculum and exams, and approves a programme of 90 credits. The credits follow the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), in which one credit means about 25 to 30 hours of study. So 90 credits mean about 2,250 to 2,700 hours. A student must pass every module, including exams under online proctoring, and a final project. She then receives a master's degree that is recognised in Europe.

The school keeps its own teachers, its own name and its own fees. The federation is paid by the school for its reviews and for each student it enrols.

Does such a degree count in India? Not automatically. An Indian university or employer may ask for an equivalence certificate for a foreign degree, which the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) issues. This is one reason why most tech-led colleges in India work with an Indian university instead.

How is a federation different from an online degree programme? In an online degree programme, one university awards its own degree, and a company builds the programme for it. In a federation, many separate schools teach their own programmes, and one accredited institution awards the degrees for all of them.
