Railway technology and signalling On rails, the locomotives, signalling and train control behind every train Indian Railways carries millions of passengers every day, and is one of the largest railways in the world. Many Indian cities now have a metro too, and more are being built. Behind every train are systems that keep it moving safely: signals, train control, power supply and track. More and more of them run on software.

The parts of a railway

Rolling stockeverything that runs on the rails, such as locomotives, which pull trains, coaches and metro trains. Signallingthe system that tells each train when it is safe to move. In traditional signalling, the track is divided into stretches called blocks, and only one train may be in a block at a time. Modern metros use communication-based train control. Each train reports its exact position all the time, so trains can safely run closer together, and more trains can run on the same line. Train protectiona system that brakes the train automatically if the driver passes a red signal or goes too fast. India has built its own, called Kavach. American law requires a similar system, called positive train control, on its main railways. Power supplyelectric trains draw power from overhead wires, and circuit breakers protect that supply from faults. Trackthe rails, and the sleepers beneath them that hold the rails in place. Who buys. The buyers are railways and metro companies. In India, they are Indian Railways and the metro rail companies of each city, all owned by governments. They buy through tenders, and the systems they buy run for decades. In America, freight railways are private companies.

Where India fits. India is spending heavily on rail: new freight corridors, faster trains, a high-speed line, and metros in dozens of cities. The global rail companies build a good share of their engineering in India.

Every company named here has posted software engineering jobs in India. Famous companies that don't actively hire software engineers in India are left out.

Trains and train control

Wabtec Corp.with engineers in Bengaluru, makes freight locomotives, braking systems and the train-control software of American railways. Its Bengaluru centre is among its largest engineering sites. Wabtec has the most job postings in this Market Segment. (More on it in Market Segment 37.5, Industrial machinery and robotics, in Industry Vertical 37, Manufacturing tech.) Alstomthe French rail group, with engineers in Bengaluru, builds metro trains, signalling and train control. Much of this work is for Indian metros and railways.

Keeping the railway running

ApnaTechwith engineers in Bengaluru, monitors the condition of track, trains and other rail equipment, and predicts when they will need maintenance. Secheron SAmakes the circuit breakers that protect a railway's power supply. Patil Groupmakes the concrete sleepers and track systems of Indian Railways. The train that drives itself.

Indian Railways is installing Kavach, its own automatic train-protection system, across its network. Metros are moving to trains that run with no driver. AI models watch the track and the trains through cameras and sensors, and predict failures before they stop a line.

That is the software of the railway: signalling and train control that keep trains safe, and systems that keep the trains, power and track working. India is spending heavily on rail, and the global rail companies build much of their engineering here.
