Java backend and full-stack engineers. Pearson's learning platforms, the university software companies and the curriculum company Curriculum Associates run on Java. Java engineers build them, almost always full-stack with React or Angular, on AWS. Java holds about its usual place, and it is hired mostly with experience.
JavaScript and Node engineers. Writing tools, online courses and student-housing software are built in JavaScript end to end. Node engineers build them in TypeScript with React, Express and NestJS, at the writing-tool companies, like Learneo and QuillBot, the marketing-skills course company Digiaccel Learning and the student-housing software company StarRez. They are about five times as common here as at a typical product company, and they take the most juniors here.
.NET engineers. Pearson, StarRez, BOLD, the test-prep company Kaplan and PowerSchool build parts of their products on the Microsoft stack, in C# with React or Angular on Azure. .NET engineers are above their usual weight, and they are hired almost entirely with experience.
Frontend engineers. BOLD, the clinical-education software company Exxat and the writing-tool companies hire frontend engineers in React and Next.js. They are above their usual weight, and they take juniors.
GenAI engineers. Tutoring, feedback and course content are natural ground for AI. Pearson hires most of the GenAI engineers here, with the learning-content company LearningMate and the online-degree platform upGrad, in Python with Vertex AI, the OpenAI API, Claude and Pinecone. GenAI holds about its usual place, and it grew in 2026.
Test engineers. The exam-coaching platforms, the learning-app company ConveGenius.AI, PowerSchool and the university software companies hire testers, in Java with Playwright, Selenium and REST Assured. Testers are less common here than at most product companies, but they take juniors readily.
Salesforce developers. Pearson runs sales and service for schools and universities on Salesforce, and the tech-training company NxtWave does the same. Salesforce developers build on Apex, Experience Cloud and Agentforce. They are several times as common here as elsewhere, and they are hired with experience.
Mobile engineers. Exam preparation in India happens on the phone. ALLEN Digital, the largest exam-coaching platform, hires most of the mobile engineers here, with the text-to-speech company Speechify, in Kotlin, Swift and React Native. Mobile engineers are about twice as common here as elsewhere, and they take juniors readily.
Full-stack engineers. The tech-training companies, like NIIT and NxtWave, Pearson, PowerSchool and the online-course platform Simplilearn hire full-stack engineers across stacks. They are about twice as common here as elsewhere, and they take juniors more readily than any other role here.
Also present. Python engineers at NxtWave and the medical-exam platform Marrow, platform and ServiceNow developers at Pearson, generalist software engineers, cloud and data engineers, Go and backend engineers at the exam-coaching platforms, generalist software engineers in education at the tech-training company NIIT, and a few ML engineers at BOLD.
Rare here. Firmware, SAP and security work barely appear.
