India is one of the fastest-growing data centre markets in the world, driven by Indian businesses moving to the cloud and by rules that require some data, like payment data, to be stored inside the country. Mumbai is the largest hub, partly because many undersea internet cables land there, with Chennai close behind. The world's server makers also do a large part of their engineering here, with Dell Technologies in Bengaluru and Pune and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) at one of its largest engineering centres anywhere, in Bengaluru.
For an engineer, this is some of the most hardware-facing work in software. Much of it is firmware, the code that starts a server and lets it be managed from far away even when it has crashed, and systems software for storage, written in C and C++ on Linux. The rest is the management software that lets a company run thousands of servers as if they were one machine.

The Market Segments go from the building to the machines inside it.
Companies that run data centres and rent out space in them, or deliver a whole data centre in a shipping container, are here, like Equinix and Armada.
The servers, storage hardware and AI clusters that fill the racks, and the firmware and management software inside them, come from companies like Dell Technologies, HPE, Lenovo, Penguin Solutions and Nexthop AI.
