Networking, infrastructure and security Networking, infrastructure and security is the ground floor that the rest of the software industry stands on. This Domain of the product-companies collection holds the companies that build the networks data travels over, the services that let businesses talk across them, the buildings and servers where data ends up, and the security products that guard all of it. Their buyers are telecom operators, IT teams and security teams, and almost never the person holding the phone. Much of the engineering is close to the hardware, and a large share of it is done in Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai.

The engineering centres that the big telecom operators run for themselves in India, each a GCC (global capability centre), are told separately. (More on them in Parent Industry 8, Inside the telecom operators, in the GCC collection.)

The Domain's four Industry Verticals follow that ground floor, data carried in Networking and telecom, messages and calls sent across it in Business communications, machines housed in Data centres and servers, and all of it guarded in Cybersecurity. Every company named in this Domain has posted software engineering jobs in India.

Networking and telecom

Networking and telecom is the road that data travels on. Its companies make the telecom and office networks, the Wi-Fi in the home and the satellite links that reach beyond the cables, like Ericsson, Nokia, Cisco and Arista Networks, and the whole picture is on the Networking and telecom page.

Business communications

Business communications is what companies send along that road. Its companies carry a business's messages and calls to people's phones and run the phone system inside the office, like Vonage, Route Mobile, RingCentral and Zoom, and more is on the Business communications page.

Data centres and servers

Data centres and servers are where the data ends up. The companies here run the buildings that house other companies' servers and make the servers and storage that fill them, like Equinix, Dell Technologies, HPE and Lenovo, and more is on the Data centres and servers page.

Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity guards all of it. Its companies protect the inbox, the login, the device, the network, the cloud, the code and the data, like Palo Alto Networks, Zscaler, Okta and CrowdStrike, and more is on the Cybersecurity page.

Where the verticals meet

The four Industry Verticals are separate markets on paper, but their borders blur, and the clearest case sits between networking and security. Networking companies built SD-WAN, software that connects a company's branches and home workers over the ordinary internet, and then added security on top of it. Security companies went the other way. Zscaler, Netskope and Palo Alto Networks began by securing users from the cloud, a market called SSE (security service edge), and have since added SD-WAN of their own. The meeting point is SASE (secure access service edge), one service that both connects and protects, and companies from both sides now compete for it, like Cisco, Aruba, Aryaka and Versa Networks from the networking side. Fortinet built both halves itself, starting from its firewall.

The same pull towards security runs through the plumbing of the network. Infoblox, which manages the names and addresses on large networks, grew into security because it sees every lookup an attacker makes. F5 and Radware began by spreading traffic across servers, and now also protect the applications behind them. The largest companies span several Industry Verticals at once. Cisco sells office networks, cloud phone systems and network security, and HPE makes servers and, through Aruba, networking equipment.

The companies that work across these borders also sit where the hiring is concentrated. Network security, where Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet and Zscaler compete, hires more than any other part of Cybersecurity, and Cisco is the largest employer in Networking and telecom.

That is Domain I, Networking, infrastructure and security, the ground floor of software, where the bits travel, the servers wait and the defences stand guard.
