Energy market analytics and trading software Modelling and trading the market for power, gas and oil The price of petrol at the pump changes with the price of crude oil, which is traded around the world every day. Electricity and gas are traded too. A power plant does not simply send out power and get paid a fixed rate. It sells its electricity, and the price can change from hour to hour.

How electricity is sold. A power producer sells in two main ways:

Long-term contractsa buyer, usually a utility, agrees to buy a plant's power at a set price for many years. Such a contract is called a power purchase agreement. Power marketsthe rest is sold on an exchange, where sellers and buyers bid for each short period of the next day, or of the next few minutes. India has power exchanges too. How electricity is sold: a power producer sells part of its power under a long-term power purchase agreement at a set price, and the rest on a power exchange, where buyers and sellers bid for each short period. How electricity is sold: a power producer sells part of its power under a long-term power purchase agreement at a set price, and the rest on a power exchange, where buyers and sellers bid for each short period.

Electricity is hard to store. So its price swings far more than the price of most goods. It is low at midday, when solar plants are producing, and high in the evening, when people come home.

Who needs to know the future. A power plant runs for 25 years or more. Before anyone builds one, they need a view of power prices over that whole time. Several groups depend on such forecasts:

  • developers deciding whether to build a plant
  • banks and investors deciding whether to pay for it
  • utilities and grid operators planning how much power they will need
  • regulators setting the rules
  • traders buying and selling energy every day

What is sold. Four kinds of products serve them:

Simulation softwarewhich models a whole power system and its market, years ahead. Here, a model means a mathematical simulation, not an AI model. Research and forecastssold on subscription. Datagathered from many sources into one place. Trading and risk-management softwarewhich records each trade and shows how much a trader could lose if prices move.

This is a specialist field. Several of its leading companies have engineering and research teams in India.

Every company named here has posted software engineering jobs in India. Famous companies that don't actively hire software engineers in India are left out.

Simulation software

Energy Exemplarwith engineers in Pune and Bengaluru, makes PLEXOS. Utilities, grid operators and regulators use PLEXOS to simulate power systems and markets years ahead. Energy Exemplar has the most job postings in this Market Segment.

Research and forecasts

Wood Mackenzie and Aurora Energy Researchboth with engineers in Delhi, publish research and forecasts of energy markets. They also sell software for exploring those forecasts. Energy Aspectswith engineers in Kolkata, and Enverus, with engineers in Bengaluru, sell research and data on oil, gas and power.

Data

Zema Global Data Corpwith engineers in Mumbai, gathers energy and commodity data from hundreds of sources into one system. Commodities are raw goods traded in bulk, such as oil, gas, coal and metals.

Trading and risk management

Brady Technologieswith engineers in Bengaluru, and Quoreka sell trading and risk-management software to energy and commodity traders.

One company here works on financing instead

CapeZerowith engineers in Bengaluru, models the tax-equity financing of clean-energy projects. In America, clean-energy projects earn tax credits. In tax-equity financing, an investor pays part of a project's cost and receives those tax credits in return. (More on it in Market Segment 20.1, Exchanges, clearing and trading platforms, in Industry Vertical 20, Wealthtech and capital markets.) The market too fast for people.

Many power markets now set a new price every few minutes. A grid full of solar, wind and batteries makes prices swing more than ever. Algorithms now offer the power of batteries and plants for sale automatically. The software that simulates markets is becoming the software that trades in them.

That is the market side of energy: simulations that look years ahead, research and data that explain prices, and software that trades on them. Much of it is built and researched in Pune, Bengaluru and Delhi.
