Pharmacy automation and online pharmacies The pharmacy, where every prescription ends up, in the hospital, in the shop or at the door Every visit to a doctor in Industry Vertical 22 ends the same way: with a prescription. Take three patients from the earlier Market Segments:
  • The grandmother in Texas, in hospital for her hip operation, gets her medicines from the hospital pharmacy.
  • The patient in Texas takes the skin doctor's prescription to a pharmacy near home.
  • The schoolteacher in Odisha gets the medicine delivered to the door by an online pharmacy.

This last Market Segment of Industry Vertical 22 follows the prescription to the medicine, through these three kinds of pharmacy. The buyers are hospitals, pharmacies and patients. It is a small Market Segment, with four companies.

Every company named here has posted software engineering jobs in India. Famous companies that don't actively hire software engineers in India are left out.

From prescription to medicine: the grandmother on the ward gets hers from the hospital pharmacy (Omnicell), the patient in Texas from a pharmacy near home (Outcomes, BlinkRx), and the schoolteacher in Odisha from an online pharmacy that delivers to the door (PharmEasy).

The hospital pharmacy. Take the grandmother in hospital.

On the ward, nurses take medicines from its locked cabinets, which check each one against the patient's record. In the central pharmacy, its robots pick and pack the medicines. Its software tracks every dose.

The pharmacy near home. Take the patient with the skin doctor's prescription.

Outcomeswith engineers in Bengaluru, sells software to America's independent pharmacies, the ones not owned by a large chain. It processes the prescription, runs the payment counter, and handles the clinical services that pharmacists are paid for, such as giving vaccines. BlinkRxwith engineers in Bengaluru, manages a prescription for branded American medicines, from the doctor's order to the patient's door. It sorts out the price and the insurance on the way. (It also appears in Market Segment 17.2, Payment gateways, in Industry Vertical 17, Payments.)

The online pharmacy. Take the schoolteacher in Odisha.

PharmEasywith engineers in Bengaluru, is one of India's largest online pharmacies. It delivers medicines and tests to the door. (It also appears in Market Segment 22.4, Telemedicine and online consultation platforms.) The prescription that finds its cheapest route.

In America, the price of a medicine depends on the insurer, the pharmacy and the discount coupon. The software in this Market Segment more and more often finds the cheapest route. AI models read the prescription and the insurance cover to do it. In India, the story is different. After years of losses, online pharmacies are merging, so fewer are left. And the regulator has still not fully settled the rules for selling medicines online.

In America the price of a medicine depends on the insurer, the pharmacy and the discount coupon, and software with AI models now reads the prescription and the insurance cover to find the cheapest route (BlinkRx, Outcomes). In America the price of a medicine depends on the insurer, the pharmacy and the discount coupon, and software with AI models now reads the prescription and the insurance cover to find the cheapest route (BlinkRx, Outcomes). So each prescription from the start of this Market Segment reaches its patient through software. A cabinet on the ward gives out the grandmother's dose. A pharmacy system fills the patient's prescription. And an app brings the schoolteacher's medicine to the door.
