Betting on sport abroad. In Britain, much of Europe and many American states, online betting on sport is legal and regulated. A betting company, called a sportsbook or bookmaker, sets the odds on each result, takes bets and pays the winners. It earns because the odds are set so that, across all bets, it pays out a little less than it takes in. More and more bets are now placed during a match, on the next ball or the next goal. This is called in-play betting.

A sportsbook takes each bet through its betting engine, while pricing sets the odds from live match data, risk management limits what it could lose, and account checks confirm identity and age.

Games of skill in India. Indian law long treated games of skill differently from gambling, which depends on chance. On that basis, fantasy cricket, rummy, poker and paid tournaments grew into one of India's largest consumer internet industries. The platforms earned a fee from the entry money of each contest. Then the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act of 2025 banned online games played for money across the country, whether of skill or of chance. The same law supports esports, organised competitions in video games, and social games played without money. Indian platforms have had to move to free games.
