How a casino earns. Every casino game is designed so that, over many bets, the casino keeps a small share of all the money wagered. The industry calls this the house edge. On a slot machine, the software sets how much of the money played is paid back to players over time. A random number generator, a program that picks results by chance, decides each spin. Regulators test and certify this software before a machine may be used.
What runs a casino floor

How a lottery runs. Many governments run lotteries to raise money, and hire a company to run the systems. A central system records every ticket sold. Terminals in shops sell tickets and pay prizes. Instant tickets, the scratch cards that show at once whether they have won, are printed by the millions. A large national lottery handles millions of tickets a day. Contracts to run a lottery often last ten years or more.

A heavily regulated business. Casinos and lotteries need licences, and regulators audit them closely. They must watch for players who are losing control, and for money laundering: using gambling to make criminal money look clean.

Casinos and lotteries are among the most regulated businesses there are. AI models now watch for the patterns that regulators care about. One is a player who is losing control. Another is a bet that looks like money laundering. A third is a table where the chips do not add up. The same analytics that keep a player playing are being asked to tell when a player should stop.
