Contract research organisations (CROs) Running the trial for a drug company, with software of their own Back to the skin cream's trial from Market Segment 25.3, Clinical trial software, with its 3,000 patients at 200 hospitals. The drug company that owns the cream probably does not run that trial itself. Most drug companies hire a contract research organisation, or CRO, to do it. The CRO does four jobs:
  • it recruits the hospitals that take part
  • it monitors the patients, and checks that each hospital follows the trial's plan
  • it manages the trial's data
  • it does the statistics, and writes up the results

This Market Segment covers the CROs that also build their own software. The buyers are drug companies and government agencies. CROs that sell only services are covered elsewhere. (More on them in the services-world collection.) This is the smallest Market Segment in Industry Vertical 25: two companies, and one more that is covered mainly in another Market Segment.

Every company named here has posted software engineering jobs in India. Famous companies that don't actively hire software engineers in India are left out.

Back to the skin cream's trial from the start of this Market Segment, now in the hands of a CRO.

Emmes Group and Emmesare two names of the same American CRO. Most of their job postings are in Bengaluru. Emmes runs trials for government agencies and companies, especially in infectious disease and vaccines. In Bengaluru, it builds Veridix, an AI platform for the work of running a trial.

One company covered mainly in another Market Segment belongs here too:

Cytelwith engineers in Pune, is here for the biometrics services it sells beside its software for designing trials. Biometrics is the statistics and data management of a trial.

Cytel is covered mainly in Market Segment 25.3, Clinical trial software, and Emmes Group also appears there.

The CRO as a software company.

A CRO's main cost is people: people doing data management, monitoring and statistics, many of them in India. The CROs that build their own software and AI models expect to run the same trials with far fewer people. The industry's largest companies are betting their profits on it.

So the skin cream's trial from the start of this Market Segment may be run by a CRO rather than the drug company. And more and more, that CRO runs it on software it builds itself, in India.
