Test engineers in the services world A role across the services world, every Company Tier together, Accenture left out. Accenture's testing is described with the rest of its hiring on its own. The short answer Testing is the oldest single-skill business in Indian IT, and across the record test engineers were one of the larger roles in the services world, at about their weight at product companies. A services firm that runs a client's systems must check every release against what the system is supposed to do, so testing sits wherever the run sits. The giants, like Wipro, Infosys and IBM, hold the largest share by far, the testing firms among the specialist firms, like Qualitest and AQM Technologies, make it their whole business, and the engineering-services firms, like Quest Global and NeST Digital, and the BPO and KPO firms, like Sutherland and TransPerfect, hire it above their weight too. Most openings are test automation in Java with Selenium, with Playwright rising fast beside it. The headline, though, is the fall. Test openings collapsed after March 2026, much faster than services hiring as a whole, because Wipro and Infosys, the two largest employers of testers, all but stopped posting test jobs. By July to September 2026 testing had shrunk to a small role, well below its weight at product companies. The door is one of the wider ones in services, with more entry and junior openings than the services rate and few senior or staff openings. Where the work sits The giants hold the largest share. Company Tier 1, The IT services giants, posted far more of the services world's test openings than any other tier across the record, at about the services rate. Wipro, which the narrative names for running cloud platforms and testing, and Infosys carried most of that, with IBM, TCS and Capgemini behind. The testing firms make it their business. In Company Tier 8, Specialist firms built around one skill, testing is well above its services weight, because the index includes firms that do nothing else. Qualitest and AQM Technologies post little but test jobs, and Birlasoft, a platform house, also hires many testers. The engineering-services firms and the BPO firms hire above their weight. In Company Tier 6, the regulator requires software in cars, aircraft and medical devices to be tested against every requirement, so testing is a large role there, with NeST Digital the most testing-led firm. In Company Tier 10, the BPO and KPO firms test the apps and translated products they run for clients, Sutherland and TransPerfect among them. The mid-sized firms sit at about the services rate, with Virtusa and UST hiring the most. Well below their weight. The quiet foreign majors, like CGI and NTT DATA, the build firms, like Luxoft and Publicis Sapient, the consulting arms, like PwC and Deloitte, and the infrastructure firms, like Kyndryl and Unisys, all hire testers at well under the services rate, the build firms and consulting arms because testing is a smaller part of a new build than of a run. What the work is

Most test openings across services are test automation, writing code that checks software automatically. A large part is manual testing, checking releases by hand against written test cases, and smaller parts are performance testing, mobile app testing and embedded testing. The split differs by kind of firm.

The giants posted the most manual testing, in large numbers at Wipro and Infosys, beside their automation work. The specialist firms are the most manual of all, with manual testing as large as automation, much of it the release testing of banks' core systems that the narrative describes. The mid-sized firms, the quiet foreign majors, the consulting arms and the small shops are almost entirely automation, among the small shops at firms like VAYUZ Technologies and Wissen Technology. The build firms have the largest share of performance testing. The BPO and KPO firms have the largest share of mobile app testing, and the engineering-services firms the largest share of embedded testing.

The postings require Java above all, with Selenium, REST Assured and Postman for testing web services, Cucumber for tests written in plain language, and TestNG or JUnit. Python is the second language, and the first at the engineering-services firms. Across the record Playwright is required nearly as often as Selenium, and Cypress often too. Performance postings require JMeter, LoadRunner and k6; mobile postings require Appium, with Espresso and XCUITest for native apps; and a group of postings require Tricentis Tosca, a commercial testing tool common in large enterprise programmes. Most postings also require a pipeline, Jenkins, Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions, because tests now run automatically on every change.

None of the test postings ask for experience with language models, unlike most other roles in services.

Testing is concentrated in Bengaluru even more than services hiring as a whole, with Hyderabad a distant second.

What is changing

These readings follow the record quarter by quarter, from October to December 2025, the third quarter of the financial year 2025-26, to July to September 2026, the second quarter of 2026-27. A longer record will show whether they last.

Test hiring fell far faster than anything around itServices firms posted fewer openings in every quarter, but test openings fell much more steeply, falling hard into January to March 2026 and far harder into April to June, then holding at that low level. Testing went from well above its weight at product companies to well below it. Testing's share at product companies eased too, but far more gently. Wipro and Infosys stoppedWipro, the largest employer of testers in the record, posted no test openings at all after March 2026, and Infosys almost none. The testing firms among the specialist firms slowed too. The mid-sized firms were the exception, and Virtusa and TCS posted test jobs again in July to September 2026. Manual testing fell hardestManual openings, a large part of the role in the winter of 2025, became a small one, so what remains is mostly automation and performance testing. Playwright rose fastThe share of test openings requiring Playwright rose in every quarter, from a small one in October to December 2025 to a large one by July to September 2026, though Selenium is still required more often.
Persistently open roles

Test jobs are persistently open about as often as services jobs overall, and when they are, the gap is short, typically a little over two weeks between first and last posting and rarely more than seven weeks.

The giants and the testing firms keep test jobs open most often. Infosys, Birlasoft, Qualitest, Capgemini and UST posted the same test job again far more often than the services average. The engineering-services firms almost never do. Specialist tools are the hardest to find. The skills found most often in persistently open test jobs are those of behaviour-driven testing, Gherkin and SpecFlow, the test-management tool Zephyr, Tricentis Tosca, LoadRunner, contract testing with Pact, and BrowserStack for testing across devices.
The door

Testing is one of the wider doors into the services world. Entry and junior openings are both more common than the services rate, mid-level openings are the clear majority, and senior and especially staff openings are rare. And as test hiring shrank through 2026, the junior share within it grew.

The giants take the most juniors in number, at Infosys and Wipro, though both stopped after March 2026. The specialist firms take juniors most readily, AQM Technologies and Birlasoft above all, along with the consulting arms (PwC most of all), the small shops and the BPO firms. The build firms and the quiet foreign majors post almost no junior testing. Senior testers are rare outside the quiet foreign majors, where the role leans senior.
In one line Testing was a large and open door into the services world in the winter of 2025, but it has shrunk faster than any other role since, and what remains wants automation in Java or Python with Playwright, not manual testing. Terms used on this page Test automation and manual testing Writing code that checks software automatically, as opposed to checking it by hand against written test cases. Performance testing Checking that software stays fast and stable under heavy use. Behaviour-driven testing, Cucumber, Gherkin and SpecFlow Tests written as plain-language scenarios that business people can read, and the tools that run them. Contract testing and Pact Checking that two services still agree on how they talk to each other. Tricentis Tosca A commercial tool for automating tests without much code, common in large enterprise and SAP programmes. Zephyr and TestRail Tools for managing test cases and their results. BrowserStack A service for testing an app on many browsers and devices. Appium, Espresso and XCUITest Tools for testing mobile apps across platforms, on Android, and on iPhone.
