On this page
What Apple hires for Apple, one of the five companies in the big-tech collection. Every comparison here is with product companies as a whole, since Apple builds and sells its own products. The short answer Apple posts far fewer software engineering openings in India than the other large big tech companies, Amazon, Microsoft and Google, and what it posts falls into two halves by city. In Bengaluru it hires for the devices, above all embedded firmware engineers for the wireless parts of its products, 5G, LTE and Bluetooth, at several times their usual weight, with C/C++ engineers for the same cellular work. In Hyderabad, where Apple first came to India to build Maps, it hires for services and its own business systems, Java, data, integration and iOS engineers. Test engineers and cloud engineers sit a little above their usual weight in both cities. GenAI engineers are below their usual weight. Unlike Amazon and Google, Apple almost never posts a role without naming its stack. Its hiring is experienced. Mid-level and senior openings make up nearly all of it, and junior openings are rare. Apple posted nothing in October to December 2025 and less in each quarter after January to March 2026. Who gets hired, and why Embedded firmware Test Cloud and DevOps Java backend C/C++ systems Data Business software ML and GenAI Also present

Embedded firmware engineers. Every iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac connects to a network, and Apple designs more and more of the chips and software that make those connections. Embedded engineers in Bengaluru write the firmware for them. The postings require C/C++ with 5G and LTE, the mobile network standards, Bluetooth, real-time operating systems, device drivers and the Linux kernel, and many require testing the firmware as well. This is much the largest role at Apple, several times its weight across product companies, and all of it is in Bengaluru.

Test engineers. Apple's services and apps are tested before they reach devices around the world. Test engineers automate that testing in Java and Python with Playwright, Selenium and REST Assured for web services, Appium and XCUITest, Apple's own tool, for iPhone apps, and JMeter, Gatling and Locust for performance. They are a little above their usual weight here, where at most big tech companies, like Microsoft and Google, they barely appear.

Cloud and DevOps engineers. Apple's services run on its own data centres and on the main public clouds. Cloud engineers build and run cloud-native platforms and site reliability, the work of keeping a service running. The postings require Python, Java and Go with Kubernetes, AWS, Google Cloud and Azure together, Spark, Flink and Kafka, and monitoring tools such as Splunk, Grafana and Prometheus. They are a little above their usual weight.

Java backend engineers. In Hyderabad, Java engineers build the services behind Apple's apps and its internal systems. The postings require the Spring family, Spring Boot, Security, Batch and Data, with MongoDB, Cassandra, Kafka and Flink, and many also require Python and Go. Java is below its usual weight overall, but it was much the largest part of what little Apple posted in July to September 2026.

C/C++ systems engineers. Beside the firmware engineers, a group of C/C++ engineers in Bengaluru work on networking and the operating system, many on the same 5G and LTE cellular work, with the Linux kernel and Rust. They are a little above their usual weight.

Data engineers. Apple's services produce large streams of data. Data engineers, mostly in Hyderabad and mostly senior, build the pipelines that carry it, with Java, Python and Scala on Spark, Kafka and Flink. They are a little above their usual weight.

Integration and business software developers. Apple runs its own business on packaged systems, and integration developers connect them, in Java and Spring Boot with Oracle Database and MongoDB, and MuleSoft. A smaller group work on the business systems themselves, PeopleSoft, Workday and others. Integration developers are several times their usual weight here, and most are in Hyderabad.

ML and GenAI engineers. A small group of ML engineers build with language models, with PyTorch, TensorFlow, LangChain, LangGraph and MCP, and a few work on classical machine learning such as anomaly detection, both above their usual weight. GenAI engineers, who fit language models into products with Python, vector databases such as Milvus and semantic search, are below their usual weight.

Also present. Go backend engineers appear at a little above their usual weight. iOS engineers in Hyderabad build apps in Swift, UIKit and SwiftUI, at about their usual weight. Frontend engineers, with accessibility and WCAG, the web accessibility standard, a recurring requirement, and full-stack and JavaScript engineers appear in small numbers below their usual weight. A few chip designers work on systems on a chip for cellular radios, and a few fintech software engineers, introduced as Software Engineer, Fintech, work on payments.

Rare here. .NET engineers, Python backend engineers, generalist software engineers, security software engineers, and SAP, Salesforce and ServiceNow engineers barely appear.

These readings follow the record quarter by quarter, from October to December 2025, the third quarter of the financial year 2025-26, to July to September 2026, the second quarter of 2026-27. A longer record will show whether they last.

Apple's hiring came early and then shrankApple posted no software engineering openings at all in October to December 2025. Its hiring was concentrated in January to March 2026, and it posted less in April to June 2026 and much less again in July to September 2026. Product companies, by contrast, hired most in April to June 2026 and roughly halved their openings only in July to September 2026. The firmware hiring came firstEmbedded firmware engineers were the largest part of Apple's hiring in January to March 2026, a much smaller part in April to June 2026, and absent in July to September 2026. What little Apple posted in July to September 2026 was mostly Java and cloud work in Hyderabad and Bengaluru. AI rose from a low baseAI work was a smaller part of Apple's hiring than of product companies' in January to March 2026, and was at about the product-company level by July to September 2026, on few openings.
Persistently open roles

Apple keeps about as many jobs open again and again as product companies do, but in a very different way.

Firmware jobs are posted again and again, far more often than at product companies, while Java jobs almost never are. When a job is posted again, it is posted again quickly, typically within about a week of the first posting, far sooner than the three weeks or so common elsewhere. The skills found most often in persistently open jobs are 5G and C/C++.
Where the work is

Apple hires in two Indian cities, and they hire for different things. Bengaluru, the larger, is where the device work is. It holds all of the embedded firmware openings, almost all of the C/C++ systems and chip design work, and most of the ML engineers. Hyderabad, home of the centre Apple opened in 2016 for Apple Maps, is where the services and business systems are. It holds most of the Java, data, integration and business software openings, and all of the iOS work. Test and cloud engineers are split between the two.

The door

Apple's door is for experienced engineers. Mid-level and senior openings make up nearly all of its hiring, both a little more common than at product companies, while staff-level openings are rarer than usual. Junior openings are much rarer than at product companies, and entry-level openings are rare too.

The few junior openings are mostly in embedded firmware and Java. Data, integration, GenAI and ML roles are hired entirely with experience.
In one line If you write firmware for 5G, LTE or Bluetooth, Apple's Bengaluru centre is one of the most specialised places in India for that work; for most other engineers Apple is a small and experienced employer, hiring mainly Java, data and integration engineers in Hyderabad. Terms used on this page 5G and LTE The mobile network standards a phone uses to connect to a cellular network. Firmware Software that runs directly on a chip inside a device. Real-time operating system A small operating system that responds within a guaranteed time, used in devices and radios. XCUITest and XCTest Apple's own tools for testing iPhone apps. Site reliability The work of keeping an online service running, and restoring it quickly when it fails. Flink and Kafka Tools for carrying and processing streams of data as they happen. MuleSoft A platform that passes data between a company's applications. PeopleSoft and Workday Packaged systems for a company's HR and finance. Milvus A database for the vectors AI models use to find related information. WCAG The international standard for making websites usable by people with disabilities. System on a chip A chip that holds a whole computer, or a whole radio.
