Social media, dating and matrimony apps Where people talk and meet, in Indian languages and in search of a partner Open the phone of someone in a small town in Uttar Pradesh. You may find a social app in Hindi full of morning greetings, devotional songs and local news. You may also find a dating app, or a matrimony app where the family is looking for a match. Publishing is no longer only for newsrooms. On these apps, ordinary people publish to each other.

Two kinds of app

Social appswhere people post, share and chat. A social network connects people to friends and to strangers who share an interest. Short-video apps show a feed of clips a few seconds long, made by users. (More on the short videos people watch in Market Segment 32.1, OTT and live streaming platforms, in Industry Vertical 32, Streaming and broadcast.) Apps for meeting someoneFriendship and dating apps help people find a friend or a date. Matrimony apps help people find a spouse, often with the family involved. Online matrimony is an industry that India built for itself.

Why Indian languages matter. Hundreds of millions of Indians came online on cheap phones. Many of them read and write mainly in their own language. Global social apps were built in English first. Indian companies built social apps in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and other languages for these users.

How the money flows

Ads in the feedSocial apps show ads between posts and videos. (More on how those ads are bought in Market Segment 34.1, Ad buying platforms (DSPs) and ad networks, in Industry Vertical 34, Adtech.) Virtual giftsUsers buy coins and send gifts to the people they follow, during live streams or chats. The app keeps a share. Paid groupsSome apps let a community leader charge members a fee to join a group. Premium plansDating and matrimony apps are free to join. Users pay for extras, such as seeing who liked them, or contacting more people. Keeping users safe. These apps must catch fake profiles, scammers and harmful posts. This work is called trust and safety. Matrimony scams, where a fake profile asks for money, are a known problem. So apps check users' identity documents, and use software to flag suspicious behaviour. (More on this in Market Segment 4.3, KYC, identity verification and fraud prevention, and Market Segment 4.15, Physical security, surveillance and trust and safety, both in Industry Vertical 4, Cybersecurity.)

Meeting someone Friendship and dating apps built around voice, matrimony

The match made by AI.

Dating and matrimony apps have always ranked profiles, to decide whom to show each user. Now AI models write the profile, suggest the first message, and screen for fakes and scams. The apps that win will be the ones people trust most. Choosing a partner may be the most personal decision anyone makes online.

That is where people talk and meet: social apps in Indian languages, and apps for finding a friend, a date or a spouse. They earn from ads, gifts and premium plans, and they succeed only if users feel safe.
