Publishing and newsroom software Tools for the publisher, the newsroom's software and its paywall When big news breaks, a newsroom has minutes to write the story, add photos, and publish it on its website, its app and social media all at once. A few free articles later, the site may ask you to subscribe. And if the site loads slowly, readers leave. A newsroom runs on software, but it rarely builds that software itself. It buys it.

What publishers buy

The content management systemReporters and editors write, edit and lay out stories in it, and publish them everywhere at once. During breaking news, many people work on the same story together. The paywall and subscriptionsMany news sites let readers see a few free articles each month, then ask them to pay. This is called a metered paywall. The software also handles sign-ups, payments and renewals. Tools that make the site load fastOne common method is caching: keeping ready-made copies of pages, so that they do not have to be built again for every reader. Tools that decide what an article is worthThis is new. AI companies now want to pay publishers to use their articles, and publishers need a way to price them. How the money flows. Publishers pay the makers of these tools a subscription. Some tools take a share of the subscription money they bring in.

Quintype Technologies Inc.with engineers in Bengaluru, sells Bold, a content management system for newsrooms, and Accesstype, its paywall and subscription service. Its customers are Indian and international publishers. Wp Rocketin Delhi, is another company in this area.

(More on the publishers that use these tools in Market Segment 33.2, Digital media publishers.)

The price of a paragraph.

Publishers have always sold readers' attention to advertisers, and subscriptions to readers. Now the companies that build AI models want to buy the content itself, and nobody knows what a paragraph is worth. Companies like Zzazz are betting that pricing content, by the article and by each use, will become a new business for publishers.

That is the software behind a newsroom: content management, paywalls, fast websites, and new tools for pricing content. Two Bengaluru start-ups sell it to publishers in India and abroad.
