Travel distribution (GDS) and airline software The wiring underneath, connecting airlines, hotels and travel sites You search for a flight from Bengaluru to Goa on a travel app. The app does not own the seats. The fare and the seat it shows usually come from a global distribution system, or GDS. A GDS is a network that connects airlines, hotels and car-rental companies to travel agencies and travel sites around the world. At the airport, the check-in counter prints your boarding pass from another system, the airline's own. Both kinds of software come from the same few companies.

This Market Segment covers that wiring underneath travel. It has two parts:

The distribution systemswhich carry the airlines' fares and seats to every travel site and agent. The airline pays a fee for each booking made through them. The airline's own systemsreservations, check-in and boarding, and the software that tracks the airline's money. The wiring underneath a flight: a global distribution system such as Amadeus or Sabre Corp. carries the airline's fares and seats to travel sites and travel agents, and the airline's own systems handle reservations, check-in and boarding, and revenue accounting, where Accelya works. The wiring underneath a flight: a global distribution system such as Amadeus or Sabre Corp. carries the airline's fares and seats to travel sites and travel agents, and the airline's own systems handle reservations, check-in and boarding, and revenue accounting, where Accelya works.

It is a small Market Segment, with five companies. But two of them have some of the most job postings in this Industry Vertical. The travel sites on top of this wiring are covered in Market Segment 29.1, Online travel agencies (OTAs). The airlines' and hotels' own engineering centres in India are covered elsewhere. (More on them in the GCC collection.)

Every company named here has posted software engineering jobs in India. Famous companies that don't actively hire software engineers in India are left out.

Back to the flight to Goa from the start of this Market Segment. Here are the companies whose systems it passed through.

Amadeusruns the largest global distribution system. It also runs the reservation, inventory and departure-control systems of many of the world's airlines. Departure control is the software for check-in, seats, bags and boarding. Amadeus also sells software for hotels and airports. Its Bengaluru centre is among its largest engineering sites. It has engineers in Bengaluru and Pune, and the most job postings in this Market Segment. Sabre Corp.runs the other large distribution system. It also sells airlines their retailing, pricing and operations software. Retailing means how an airline packages and sells its seats and extras, such as meals and bags. Sabre has engineers in Bengaluru. Accelyagrew from an Indian airline-accounting company. It sells airlines their revenue accounting, which tracks the money from every ticket, even when one trip uses several airlines. It also sells cargo systems. And it sells the retailing software through which airlines sell directly, using a new industry standard called NDC, short for New Distribution Capability. Accelya has engineers in Pune and Mumbai. Travclanb2B and AirIQ 365sell travel agents the platforms and APIs through which they book flights and holiday packages. Travclanb2B has engineers in Delhi.

Travelport and TBO Tek are not covered in this Market Segment.

The airline that sells like a shop.

Airlines used to file their fares with the distribution systems, which showed the same fares to everyone. Now airlines are building their own offers and orders, priced for each customer. They sell them directly, or through agents. The distribution systems are rebuilding themselves around this change. Much of the software for it is written in Bengaluru and Pune.
