The smaller roles in the services world The roles not covered on their own, across the services world, every Company Tier together, Accenture left out. Accenture's smaller roles are described with the rest of its hiring on its own. The short answer Beyond Java, testing, cloud, data, .NET, GenAI, frontend and mobile, the business platforms and embedded work, the services world hires for a long list of smaller roles. Together they are a sizeable part of its openings, so they matter, but none is large on its own. They fall into two groups. The first is work the services world hires far more of than product companies do, because it is the work of running and extending clients' existing systems. It covers generalist software engineers posted in volume by Capgemini and Wipro, mainframe engineers, Adobe Experience Manager developers, engineering-software developers and Power BI developers. The second is work that product companies hire more of and services hires less, JavaScript and Node engineers, Python engineers, full-stack and backend engineers hired for the build rather than one language, ML engineers, Go engineers, domain software engineers, and security software engineers, the role services hires least relative to product companies. Most of these roles fell through 2026, the client-system roles of the first group hardest, as IBM and Infosys pulled back. The roles services hires more than product companies do Generalist software engineers. The largest of the smaller roles, and several times its weight at product companies. These postings describe general development work rather than one stack, often naming only Python. Most of them are at three giants, Capgemini, Wipro and Infosys, which hire generalists in volume to staff across many client accounts. Some lean to building applications, in Java, C# and Python, at NTT DATA and Infinite Computer Solutions; some lean to infrastructure, at Wipro. Generalist hiring held up into June 2026 and then fell back. Mainframe engineers. Banks, insurers and airlines still run their core systems on mainframes, and keeping them running is services work, at many times its weight at product companies. The postings require COBOL, JCL, CICS and z/OS, AS/400 and RPG, and IMS and VSAM for the data. Infosys and IBM hire the most, then CGI and UST. Mainframe openings collapsed after March 2026. Adobe Experience Manager developers. Large companies build their websites on Adobe's content platform, and services firms build and run them, at several times the product-company rate. The postings require AEM with Apache Sling, OSGi and the JCR content store, JavaScript and Java. IBM posted most of this work, then Infosys, and it fell away sharply from January 2026. Engineering-software developers. Developers who build software around the design tools of engineers, Siemens NX, Teamcenter, AutoCAD and CATIA, or 3D and simulation applications in Unity, at several times their product-company weight. Wipro and Deloitte hire the most. Power BI and other reporting developers. Developers who build business reports and dashboards in Power BI with DAX and Power Query, or in Tableau, at several times their product-company weight. CGI hires the most Power BI work. The roles services hires less than product companies do JavaScript and Node full-stack engineers. The largest of this group, a little below their product-company weight. They build in Node.js, React and TypeScript with Express, at the giants, the mid-sized firms, like Virtusa and Synechron, and the consulting arms, like Deloitte and Sia, which hire them at twice their services weight. IBM, Infosys and Deloitte hire the most. Openings fell steeply after March 2026. Python backend and full-stack engineers. A little below their product-company weight. The postings require Python with FastAPI, Flask or Django behind React or Angular. The consulting arms hire them at three times their services weight, BCG X and Deloitte above all, and the specialist firms at over twice, YASH Technologies above all. Python held up better than most roles through 2026. Full-stack and backend engineers hired for the build. Engineers hired for a product rather than a language, working in React with Python or Node, or in Python with SQL. The build firms and the small shops hire them well above their services weight, EPAM and AgileEngine above all, and Infosys hires many. Generalist software engineers in a client's industry. Postings that place an engineer with a client's industry without naming its domain, in Python, JavaScript and Java with Spring Boot, at Infosys and TCS above all, and at the build firms, the mid-sized firms and the small shops above their weight. Software Engineer, Fintech. Software engineers who work on the systems of banks and insurers, about their product-company weight. A part of them work on Guidewire, the insurance platform, and Finacle, the core banking system, at Infosys, PwC, EY and AQM Technologies. Software Engineer, Healthtech is much smaller, for medical-device and health-record software, mostly at the engineering-services firms, like Quest Global, Cyient and NeST Digital. ML engineers. Engineers who train and tune models, in Python with TensorFlow, PyTorch and scikit-learn, and some who adapt language models, at about their product-company weight. IBM, NTT DATA and Infosys hire the most, and the quiet foreign majors, like NTT DATA and CGI, hire them at over twice their services weight. ML openings fell steeply after December 2025. Go backend engineers. Well under their product-company weight. Most of them are at IBM, building cloud services in Go with Kubernetes. Software Engineer, Security. Software engineers who specialise in security: they build login systems, cloud and network protections, and the checks that keep code safe. This is the role services hires least relative to product companies, far below their weight there. The work is mostly identity and access, then application security and cloud security, in Python and Java with OpenID Connect, SAML, Entra ID and Prisma Cloud. IBM, TCS, CGI, Infosys and Persistent Systems hire the most. What is changing

These readings follow the record quarter by quarter, from October to December 2025, the third quarter of the financial year 2025-26, to July to September 2026, the second quarter of 2026-27. A longer record will show whether they last.

The client-system roles fell hardestAdobe Experience Manager and mainframe openings were a small fraction of their winter 2025 level by July to September 2026, as IBM and Infosys posted far less. ML engineering fell almost as far. The build roles held up betterGo engineers and security software engineers kept close to their level through 2026, and Python engineers fell less than services hiring overall. Generalists held, then fellCapgemini's and Wipro's generalist hiring held into June 2026 and fell back in July to September 2026.
The door

The doors differ sharply.

Security is the widest door of all the smaller roles, with juniors far above the services rate, at Bristlecone, IBM and PwC. Generalist roles are a wide door too, most of all at Capgemini, which takes many juniors into them. Language-agnostic backend work and Power BI work take juniors above the services rate. Adobe Experience Manager, fintech and mainframe work are the narrowest, with almost no junior openings.
In one line Outside the main roles, the services world hires generalists in volume and keeps old client systems running, mainframe and Adobe sites above all, while it hires the build roles product companies lean on, Python, Node, ML, Go and above all security, at well under their product-company weight. Terms used on this page Mainframe, COBOL, JCL, CICS and z/OS The large central computers banks and insurers still run, their main language, their job-control scripts, their transaction system and their operating system. AS/400 and RPG An older IBM business computer and its programming language. Adobe Experience Manager, Apache Sling, OSGi and JCR Adobe's platform for large corporate websites, and the open-source parts it is built on. Siemens NX, Teamcenter, AutoCAD and CATIA Engineering design tools and the system that manages engineering data. Unity A 3D engine, built for games, also used for simulations. Power BI, DAX, Power Query and Tableau Tools for business reports and dashboards, and Power BI's formula and data-preparation languages. Guidewire A packaged system insurers use for policies, billing and claims. Finacle A core banking system, the software that holds a bank's accounts and transactions. OpenID Connect, SAML and Entra ID Standards and Microsoft's service for signing in once across many systems. Prisma Cloud A tool for finding security problems in cloud systems.
